Money and Y2K

Money Supply
I posted this as a reply on another thread, but I wanted to re-post it because I'd like to get some input on whether you all think my assumptions are reasonable or not.

Best way to short the market?
Are there any schemes out there to do it for you? Woulda mutual fund like the Prudent Bear be the way to go? And would selling the prudent bear shares be a problem if/when the market crashed

On Preparation and Poverty
The "average" American family is not frugal. They often live right up to the edge of their income... no matter what the income level.

Is having GOLD a good thing in a Deflationary economy?
Can anyone explain to me how gold/silver would benefit if the economy suffers a deflationary hit due to Y2K?

On withdrawing money from retirement accounts
Before liquidating your retirement accounts, you are wise to consult a CPA or qualified financial professional. Whilethis is a personal financial decision, it is important to have accurate information.

Post-Y2K economy discussion
I'm wondering if Y2k might give the government an opportunity to develope a currency backed by a gold standard. Here's my thinking.

Security in buying gold?
though this site with its informed and often opposing opinions is educational. Here it is: Could non-collector category gold coins such as Krugerrands/Mapleleaves be confiscated in a Y2K crunch?

Mr. Decker, a question about future money?
If there isn't enough paper cash to go around for all of us nervous nellies this December, but y2k does NOT cause significant power outages / computer failures, couldn't the bank just issue us debit cards in pre set denominations?

Gold and Silver Coins: Investment and/or Insurance?
I would like to hear your opinion on whether they are a good investment and insurance against the technological and economic unknowns of 2000.

Your Vote for what Y2K Currency Will Be
OK - As a Y2K community and an individual please tell me what you would accept for trade if you are in the bartering mood come the year 2000? I vote black jelly beans, gold and silver

Minimum Y2K $$$
Now, ask yourself--whatif suddenly you WEREN'T SURE that you were goingto have a serious house fire, or car accident, or healthproblem on Jan. 1, 2000? Would that worry you? This $ amount should be the minimum you spend on Y2K prep.

My experience buying gold today
I paid by money order and thinking that the transaction was under (well under) 10,000 I wouldn't need to give any identification, that I could remain annonymous. But they required a drivers license and took my SS #.

Platinum vs gold
I decided to buy platinum instead of gold because of the following reasons:

Gold & silver Bouillon coins
Can someone please supply me with information on gold & silver bouillon coins.

If I had enough cash to buy gold coins--how would I do it?
I have visions of going into sleazy pawnshops, or buying from suspicious folk on the Internet.

Barter System?
I am wondering about a possible Barter system postY2K. I wonder how soon it will come into place. What things will be good to have for bartering

What's the single best barter item?
If you were going to store up on one single barter item, what would it be?

My parents are going to lose everything!!!
I'm sure he would not listen to my pleas to get rid of the stock. I've already tried very delicately to bring up the Y2K thing and his response was, "you can't panic".

Rationale for 'personal records/documentation' advisory ?
In the event of loss of access by institutions to records of inviduals' accounts, would they accept such documentation to re-establish accounts ?
