Piano wire cuts down

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Elevator Problem Discussion : One Thread

Is there any limitation in using piano wires for fixing the vanes for high speed (>1.8m/s).Because the vane wires start oscillating when the elevator goes in high speed?

I am not sure of your application but in the states we use PW for earthquake wires that run alongside the cwt and the the 1/16 cable is much better. Does not get kinks and can be stretched without the worry of PW of breaking. Are you using PW for hanging vanes???Dont you have brackets off the rails.

Jim, Instead of using fixed brackets on the rails for fixing vanes ,we used to fix that on the piano wire which is clamped at the top & bottom by brackets. It worked well up to 1.5 m/s but for elevators having speed greator than 1.5m/s the wire starts oscillating which results in cut down.Is there any other option apart from fixing vane brackets on rails?

The only reason I can think of that speed would bring on oscillation would be the air movement as the unit passed the vane. Is there any other items attached to the car that may cause this air disturbance? Is the oscillation worse in one direction as that may point to air movement being the culprit? Is there only 1 vane or is it a multiple bank of vanes? Is this problem also related to the length of travel? If so you may be able to fit a stabiliser (non magnetic of course) at intervals in the shaft.
