GREAT LAKES SECURITY article and follow-up

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Current News - Homefront Preparations : One Thread

I heard Congressman Bart Stupack (MI, sp? sorry, I'm Canadian) interviewed on CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.) radio this morning, the station out of Sudbury, Ontario. Cong. Stupack is concerned regarding the security of the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, MI. They have "beefed up security", "installed security devices", and requested and overall threat assesment on the locks. He, and a number of other northern politicians (sorry, couldn't write fast enough), have written to Pres. Bush, the Gov. of Michigan, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Dir. (?) of Homeland Security regarding the locks security and threat assesment. Sorry if I've gotten a title or two wrong. I believe he said he hadn't yet had a response. Below is an article I found regarding the videotaping of the locks, related to my previous post.

10/17/01 Locks pair found legitimate

By JACK STOREY/The Evening News

SAULT STE. MARIE -- City Police Chief Lou Murray on Tuesday confirmed that two men spotted making videotapes of the Soo Locks on Oct. 6 are professionals and US citizens with, "... legitimate reasons for doing what they were doing."

Murray said he contacted the FBI in connection with local worries that the two men were up to no good in Locks Park. He said agents informed him that they had, indeed, interviewed the pair, reviewed the circumstances and do not consider them a threat.

Murray also said the two were not on any watch list at the FBI.

He reported his findings to the City Commission on Monday

Asked if the false alarm means that local people should be less suspicious of strangers taking pictures, Murray hedged to a point.

"The President did say it is important to be vigilant," he said. "It requires a personal judgment. Something that may be alarming to one person may not be to others," he said.

Clearly attempting to walk a narrow line, Murray suggested in light of the Sept. 11 attacks that to err on the side of caution is probably wise.

"I guess I'd say if whatever it is makes a person uncomfortable ..." he said.

The police chief said that is especially true for people who run regular routes. He indicated it is prudent if you see something you know to be out of the ordinary to call.

He acknowledged that area police agencies are likely to receive more false alarm calls after the September attacks but did not discourage citizens with legitimate concerns from calling 911.

FBI agents were apparently able to trace the two men from a vehicle description and license number obtained by alert private security guards at Locks Park.

Thanks for "hot-linking" for me, Barefoot. I'm not that computer literate yet. Yes, I am near the lakes. I currently live about a mile in off the north shore of Lake Huron. I'm especially concerned as I grew up in the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario area, on Lake Superior. Most of my family is there, as well as in Detroit / Windsor. We'd all be affected by an attack on the locks.

Barefoot,

A-ha-ha, humor. Didn't catch it the first time around. So cold up here this morning, there's frost on my monitor...LOL

When I'm around and the connection to the net cooperates, I don't mind making hot links and stuff. Helps many of our membership out, just as having cold links helps. someof our membership don't know how to use a hot link, so don't fret not knowing how to do it.

We have threads in a catagory at the bottom of the front page [where the questions are] that can help to learn how, if you're interested. No pressure.

We have rain moving around town here, and the sun comes and goes. Weather man says it is gonna be windy again, but I haven't seen any yet. It was nice and breezy yesterday, tho.

I see now why you are monitoring the lakes. Good thing. It helps to have people all over who can report on local stuff that the rest of the membership may not hear about on the local news.

Many of the folks I know around here in Miami Fla wonder how protected the coastline is in Fla. We have a great deal of coastline, you know. It isn't that we expect to be invaded down here, but...

I posted some articles from a local paper, about OJ and also about a cheese house in Wyoming. LOL I would think Wisconsin would have been a more likely state for the cheese art house. LOL Glad I don't live there!

I understand, Barefoot. My aunt and uncle are just north of Daytona Beach, on the coast. Not only are they concerned because of their location, but their kids are in Detroit. One son a police officer. My aunt and police officer cousin were up on the weekend, and they were quite jittery.

Thanks for pointing out where I can learn to do my own links. I've always wanted to know. Now I'll probably not come across anything to post.....LOL

rb, thanks to your federal tax dollars, I spent the spring of 1983 along the dunes of Lake Superior at the White Fish Point Observatory counting migrating hawks and loons. Where the Edmund Fitzgerald didn't quite hang a right into the Soo in time. Magnificant countryside.

rb and anyone else, if you'd like to practice making hotlinks or placing images, go ahead and start a thread called "Hotlink testing" or something. We'll clean it up when you've done.

Thanks, OG, I'm on my way.

Brooks, I guess those tax dollars did double duty. Migratory count, and a living, breathing tourism ad! Yes, it's magnificent. I've always had a love affair with Lake Superior. Even living on the west coast (Vancouver area) couldn't beat it, in my eyes.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid but I'm not convinced they were'nt up to no good. It seems part of their MO is to get as legit as they can so if they're stopped by the cops they can offer a plausible cover. Think about the guys who were taking truck driving school that would permit them to haul explosives. Of course we didn't hear the whole story so its hard to say with certainty.
