Is there a set maximum allowable distance that ropes may slide through on a gearless elevator, if the stop button is pressed at full speed?

Sorry, forgot to mention the car is roped 2:1, double wrap, over head gearless machine. I asked this question because I have a lift that is approx. 15 years old, and when the emergency stop is pressed with the lift going full speed, the ropes slip through about 3 metres...
