Will this forum survive? I hope so.

Answers

I'd post more but I don't know how to "import/copy" stuff from interesting articles. Nor do I know how to prepare and insert a posting using Word.

Want more? Tell me, and I'm certain a lot of others, how to do it.

I think that's cause LL checked into detox yesterday.

-- (@ .), March 28, 2000.

Uh Lars, That's 16 new threads, A lot of posts as answers though.

-- Malcolm Taylor (taylorm@es.co.nz), March 28, 2000.

Todd:

Personally, I'd prefer just a URL. If I'm interested, I can go there to read the original. Much better to *discuss* what we read.

Also, I find notepad a fine editor for preparing those posts I don't compose right in the answer block.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), March 28, 2000.

Todd:

Just cut and paste. Better yet just link to the article. No offense intended, but if you don't know how to do that read:

How to link

Linking is to your advantage as it will save you from the jibes of those who hate to see long articles posed.

Best wishes,,,,

-- Z1X4Y7 (Z1X4Y7@aol.com), March 28, 2000.

Todd,
Importing material can usually be done by 1) using the left mouse button to select (highlight) the desired text, 2) doing Copy (control-c) and finally 3) doing Paste (control-v) into the box where the text of your post would go. As noted above, many items are more suitably linked than posted directly.

Other information may be found among the Techno-geek questions threads from the old TB2000 forum.

Hope this helps.

-- David L (bumpkin@dnet.net), March 28, 2000.

David:

You are assuming that he is using a Win machine. If you are using a Mac, just use the mouse to select the information to be copied and go to view and click copy [or command V}. You can then paste into the proper space [paste under view or command P]. If you are using UNIX and asking this question, you shouldn't be allowed near a UNIX station. Linking is better.

Best wishes,,,,

Z

-- Z1X4Y7 (Z1X4Y7@aol.com), March 28, 2000.

Shouldn't do this when I'm tired. On a Mac Copy is Command C and Paste is command V. I do it by habit on all of these systems, but remember it, no way.

Best wishes,,,,

Houston here but lurking. All that jabbering about IP locating made me uncomfortable-even though we're all traceable anyway. The discussions have always been one of the primo features of the board, but there has to be a focus besides stalking and fantasies. I think a lot of people hopped over to GICC until things stabilized. Hope it gets back on track. Found information that was significant here and the old board that I would never have known about otherwise.

And I still think that the disruptions are not random. I'm just not inclined to deal in print with Y2Kiddies-got my kids safely raised, thank you very much, and are doing a great job raising theirs. When I am free, I prefer communication on a (relatively)adult level.

Thanks to all. I'll check it out.

Mike in Houston:

Can you be traced? Sure, but it isnt as easy as you seem to think. Yet, who cares? I express opinions here that I express at local polictical meetings. I send the same opinions to my reps. They reply. They already know who I am. I havent been hiding. If you have something to say which is important, say it. Unless you intend to be a terrorist, it is unlikely anyone in the gov.com will pay any attention to your post. You are free to say what you think. Go to it. We welcome your contributions.

Best wishes,,,

When a certain individual threatens to find out who you are (invasion of privacy), and when a certain individual thinks that this forum should revolve around them, it's no wonder people do not want to post here anymore. Will this forum survive? Time will tell.

-- time will tell (timewilltelll@timewilltelll.xcom), March 28, 2000.

I agree with Mike in Houston. All the talk of IP tracing makes me uncomfortable. I've already had my IP posted on the old TB2000. IMHO the focus on this sort of thing on this board is keeping quite a few of us from becoming more involved.

Yes, all of us are traceable. Most of the time online we don't run into the "intent" to trace like we do on this board.

I was there the night this board was "born" and I check in everyday to watch it grow. I believe this forum will not only survive but will continue to grow and become what it was meant to be...a meeting of many minds...uncensored. My only concern is that some will misuse that freedom at a cost to the rest.

In the meantime 16 new posts gave me 16 new things to think about today. Not bad.

-- Debra (respectingyour@privacy.com), March 28, 2000.

Oh, for Pete's sake. If you don't post your name or phone number, you CANNOT be traced. The only thing someone can do is trace your IP address to an area.

I'm sorry if I caused some people to be fearful about this, but dog gone it, the FUD has to stop sometime.

Time will tell:

So far they think that I am Flint, Decker and Martha Stewart [and I have been on this site since it started]. LL, thinks that I am a woman [no offense LL, I hope you don't make the same mistakes with your dates :o)] . Go figure. You must be much more important than me and have a lot more to hide. I have nothing to hide.

Best wishes,,

All right, if it'll make you people feel better, I'll give you the sum total of what people can find out about you.

I need to say that again.

I'm sorry people.

I never meant anyone any harm. Netghost and I had an "understanding" and that's why I was learning to track her/him.

Go ahead and enjoy this forum. I'm not vicious; I'm just curious :o)

Hello Z,
Thanks for clarifying my answer as being WINDOWS oriented. Hey, at least the link worked.

LL:

Did I ever indicate otherwise. Of course not. Don't understand the paranoia that has been incited. You are not to blame. Forget it. It was there before.

I can't think of anything that would make me [and probably several others] feel better about you.

Dude,

Thanks for the support, but I'm in the habit of trying to REDUCE paranoia; not cause it.

Without accurate information people are afraid. Y2k proved that to all of us, didn't it?

Thanks for your good wishes, I have a few good wishes for you also.

Z-

It's not about "hiding something". It's about invasion of privacy and it's about personal security. It is not a good idea to post your name and address on a forum like this and it is indeed threatening to have people suggest they can/will trace IP's. If an IP address can be traced to an area common sense tells you somehow it can be traced to a name. When you have a name and an area you can easily get directions to anyone's front door.

-- Debra (mynamewould showup@here.com), March 28, 2000.

Your actions on line do not bear that out, LL

-- nope (not@all.ever), March 28, 2000.

step out of line

and take you away.

You have to STOP!

Hey, what's that sound?

Everybody look what's going down.

(You're fearing things unneedlessly.)

-- (Buffalo@Springfield.edu), March 28, 2000.

Debra, perhaps all this talk of IP has confused and frightened you. I assure you no one can trace you back home from your IP address. The IP only tells what ISP (internet provider) you come from, and your ISP will not disclose your name and phone number to anyone, unless you're a hacker/terrorist the FBI is looking for.

Back to Lars' topic. Go to the recent answers page and take a quick peek at the threads that have had the most posts in the past few days. You'll see that topics about Hawk, Laura, and Christianity are the most popular. If you read those topics, they also contain a lot of trolls, obscenities, flames and threats of various kinds...coincidence? I would guess that if you just start one thread, and call it "What do you imagine Hawk and Laura think of Christians?", this forum will survive for a long time!

My@.02 cents,

ROFLMAO!!

Old TB2K-

Thanks for your concern. I do appreciate it.

On the night this board was opened my ISP and AREA was posted on the old TB2K board. For some reason the sysops there felt the need to do that. If I ever wanted to use my real email address here my name would be available to everyone. Two simple things...my area and my name. Someone would only have to call information to get my phone number and then use a reverse directory to get my address. I don't know for sure but I suspect there may be an even more direct route to that information.

I'm not saying that anyone would want that information. I am saying that it is possible to get it. Considering the fact that there is so much talk here about tracing IP's I think that many (including myself) may hesitate to become involved. This is a wonderful forum and I believe it is a good thing to recognize that this is an important consideration in it's growth. I have been meaning to email you about this very subject. When I read the above postings and realized that others DID have the same concerns I decided to post here.

I don't mean to frighten others but this is a real issue. Everyone should realize that their behaviors here have consequences. If one of the consequences is that some hesitate to post then all of us are cheated.

One of my most humbling lessons in life has been that I have "classic reactions". Not unique as I would like to believe but classic. If I react in this way to these postings I "know" many (if not most) others do too.

Todd, good luck in developing your link and copy/paste skills. Please weight carefully the advice to give the URL only because, as those of us who follow news know, links die very quickly and many media sources do not archive their material. This means that if you do not copy the article as well as the URL it won't be long before those following the link will not be able to access the article.

-- viewer (justp@ssing.by), March 29, 2000.

Debra,

There's a couple of things you can do to eliminate your fear.

1. Get an account that doesn't have your real name on it.

A. Go to www.yahoo.com, and get free e-mail.

B. Don't put in your real name or personal information.

C. Don't say you're under 18.

D. Make sure you clear the advertising boxes.

2. Get a remailer account.

Viola! You'll never have to worry about assholes like Squire & Co. again.

(Excellent site, Read it and weep. Thank you very much.)

Lovely LL (who keeps the board alive in its quiescent periods):

Don't mislead them: as the ULG states, once one signs on, one enters the turf of the cracker. And that means white hat, black hat, red hat and various and sundry special interests.

So who can live in a vacuum? Better to be in the mix and alive than off-line and dead.

Lurking is no protection.

If one is on the net, unless totally and blissfully ignorant, in the game is a given. And that's not a bad thing. Entering the net is like living in society: all kinds of interactions, just have to know that others are there and learn how to handle them.

And thanks, LL, for filling in those spaces. It's kept it going.Uncensored is like GICC was at in/con/ception: it'll get it's bearings, just have to give it time.

Paranoiacally,

mike
