This a very broad subject and would be hard to do by E-mail.

The two most important types are:

Traction Elevators: Pulled up by wire ropes (cables) attached to the car frame.

Hydraulic Elevators: Pushed up from below by a hydraulic jack.

For any real details, you should consult a book. One very good one is:

THE VERTICAL TRANSPORTATION HANDBOOK -edited by George R. Strakosch and published by Wiley.
