greenspun.com : LUSENET : Elevator Problem Discussion : One Thread

Just wondering if anybody has the real story on the elevator "fall" at this building on 1-26-00.

I would also like to know a little bit more about this high speed elevator. Finnish newspapers wrote a horror story about this issue. The reason for this fall was because cable was damaged???. What cable? Overspeedgovernors rope perhaps but there have to be much more...

Go to http://www.elevator-world.com/daily/dailyup1.html-ssi There is a post about this there.

The one thing you can be relatively sure about a "free fall" is that it didn't.

Tach Fault...

I'll bet there was a tach fault and the Otis flyball governor was not calibrated correctly, and by the time it did trip it ripped the governor rope out...I used to replace governors regurally in the Chrysler Bldg. due to brass bushings wearing out.. And a low rise governor would not have the same strength brass bushing as a high rise governor...And looking at them you would learn the hard way...it would last or it wouldn't...and when we would replace one of these 1928 governors the data tag would say tripping speed 1150 f.p.m., but I'm sure no one has bench tested the tripping speed with a motor in decades...

Just my opinion...
