What has happened to this forum

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I got this computer in May of 99 and had never been on the net in my life. I started "surfing' the web and happened upon the Gary North page by accident. I have no computer knowledge at all but I saw Ed's book advertized and bought it. I became an immediate "doomer". have been trying to gradually prepare for the last eight months and have been constant lurker on this site looking for all the information I could find. I have just recieved notice from my wife that I have overspent on my "stupid" obsession and she wants a divorce. Well, I still believe that we have something to fear but all I get from the people on this site now are cute remarks and profanity. I've given up alot for my beliefs and I wish you all could get back to the business at hand. STAYING ALIVE!!

-- Jim Edwards (swat@hotmail.com), November 14, 1999

They have totally lost it. This used to be a great place to post and share Y2K information. The nut cases have taken over the board.

Sorry about your divorce.

-- (Unarmed@home.com), November 14, 1999.

Sorry to hear that Jim.

Some people forget themselves.

Sounds like it's time for you to unplug and repair "what's important" to you and your future life. Chuck, our Mad Deleter, is taking a bit of R&R too.

Balance... in all things.

(Unarmed@home.com--glad to see you show some sensitivity. It's rare coming from you. Talk about some "nutcase" actions on this board! You've been particularly trollish 'n nasty for some time).

-- Diane J. Squire (sacredspaces@yahoo.com), November 14, 1999.

Jim, I tried your mail but could not find you so I presume this is a bad address. The address I gave is correct so if you wish to talk to someone who has just gone through the same thing, mail me and we can discuss this. I've noticed the same thing about this forum so we might have a lot to talk about.

-- Lloyd Godfree (coachg47@yahoo.com), November 14, 1999.

Hello. Sorry to hear about your wife. I think there are a lot of "preppers" here on the board, but they need to let off a little steam. Probably the reason why there are "cutsie" remarks lately - a good way to let off a little tension.

Believe me, I'm still prepping. Good luck to you.

GI'd 8/99.

-- Deb M. (vmcclell@columbus.rr.com), November 14, 1999.

Jim = Lloyd.

Humm. Are you game playing Jim/Lloyd?

Not particularly ethical.

-- Diane J. Squire (sacredspaces@yahoo.com), November 14, 1999.

Dear Jim, my Husband "gets" it, he just is frozen. He has not helped, one iota. This is the man I have been married to for 25 years. He has ridiculed and blasted my preparations. Bottom line for me was if he really cared for me, he would have attempted to help me because I preceived it to be a threat. Even if it turns about to be a "bump", that not change the fact that I sensed danger and was terrified, and he did nothing to help me to feel better. I wax and wane from being angry to feeling compassion because he is weak. But then I get to thinking about he is the fellow human I expect to help me if I get sick in old age, God Forbid, I should break a hip! I think I should quickly become an Attorney. Got a feeling the Divorce Courts are going to be back-logged for the next ten years.

-- Spitting Mad (Divorcecourt@backlog.com), November 14, 1999.

Fine. Rush down and be the first to file seperation papers and don't accept her back into your life when she is hungry. Part as fast as possible so you're not stuck with the stupid thing as she awakens along with the 97%. You'll be a resource to her and not much else.

I think I've read one can obtain a divorce in NV within two weeks of being there or something to that effect. That'd be a nice idea.

Ooh and be sure you remove all your supplies lickety split so in a juvenile "fit" she can't take out her personal revenge on your supplies. Give no warning in this. Just arrive home when no one there, fill up your car with all your preps, and take them to a safe haven never disclosing the location.

-- Paula (chowbabe@pacbell.net), November 14, 1999.

Jim, in order to support your generalization about the board, I think you'd have to do a much more careful investigation. Some typology for categorizing posts and responses, and some statistics on relative frequency of various types over time. Lacking this, you are prey to the natural tendency of human beings to focus on the sensational, and the negative, in forming your opinions (Just as mass media does). There are still a great many serious, on-topic posts about all aspects of y2k: gov, business, local gov, oil, economy, overseas, and many other areas.

-- Count Vronsky (vronsky@anna.lit), November 14, 1999.

I agree with Paula, if she'll divorce over your preparations for Y2K....imagine if she found out about your mistress (just kidding=). In all seriousness, my wife and I are currently semi-separated, but luckily, we both agree that IF something goes wrong with our economy, it makes sense to be as prepared as possible....for the sake of the children.

If you have kids, you might want to stick it out...& chalk up her divorce demands to the usual "wants attention" tantrum....but if you dont have kids....why not...GO!

-- Incredulous (pa404@onebox.com), November 14, 1999.

Hang in there, some of the hardest people to convince about the Y2K are those very folks your most intimate with. If she is requesting a divorce truly because of your obsession with Y2K, well in 47 days or so she will asking for forgiveness. As far as this forum goes, its just evolving. There are lots of good tips, each and every day. Lets face it, when folks veiw info like the stuff that makes it here, over time its bound to effect ones psyche. (We all live in different worlds and share the same planet)...---...

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles at home. I can't imagine there is anything I can write or say to give you comfort, but if you need someone to listen to you, email me and I'll send you my phone number. If you live near Dee Cee, we can go have coffee or steak.

Sincerely, Stan Faryna

-- Stan Faryna (faryna@groupmail.com), November 14, 1999.

In my most humble opinion Jim, I believe it is the lateness in the hour. The clock is winding down now. Its scary, frantic, second- guessing, adrenaline running, privately hopeing (bitr), last minute prepping - all at once. Posters (doomers & pollies & trolls) are taking their leave and saying good-bye. I have only experienced this board for a short time (4wks aprox), it has transformed even in that small amount of time. The posts are coming faster than I can keep up with. I think many of the contributions, mine included, are short - and sweet(sour) - pro(con) for the running thread just enough to be involved/intouch and just enough to allow yourself the time to sift through the multitude of other threads (and their links). I for one want to stay on top of the latest breaking news but it is extemely time consuming, as I am sure all on this forum can attest. If not for the outstanding efforts of Sysman, Diane, Brian, OG, et al (where's Homer?) who's pertinent links and informative posts make data sifting manageable I would most certainly go nuts ;-)

I am terribly sorry to hear about your marriage troubles. If she truly loves you than whats important to you MUST be important to her (and vice-verca). Allow yourselves to "AGREE TO DISAGREE".

-- karla (karlacalif@aol.com), November 14, 1999.

Bravo - Stan;

Your thoughtfulness and thoroughness are an inspiration!

-- Bill P (porterwn@one.net), November 14, 1999.

Uh posters.

Sad to say but "Jim" appears to be trolling.

Jim Edwards (swat@hotmail.com) = Lloyd Godfree (coachg47@yahoo.com)

He's answering his own post pretending to be someone else.

Wouldn't necessarily offer my phone number Stan.

A TBY2K Sysop

-- Diane J. Squire (sacredspaces@yahoo.com), November 14, 1999.

I agree that the sheer volume is making it hard to keep up. However, please remain aware that letting others sift your information for you is very close to letting others think for you. This forum is not populated by researchers, but rather by advocates. The output of their sifting is the information that agrees with what they're advocating. It's possible to paint a totally false picture without ever telling a lie. That's why, in court, they don't just ask for the truth. They ask for the WHOLE truth. You won't find that here.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), November 14, 1999.

Damn it, these piss-ant trolls are getting ever more obnoxious, even if they don't always post in green. Pathetic frigging morons, why can't they just stay over at "de-bunky" and converse with the rest of those brain dead pieces of crap?

Maybe it's time for the SYSOPS to declare Martial Law on this forum. With 1.5 months to go, any time wasted by crap like this becomes more inexcusable. How about a "one strike and you are out" law -- ban an IP address that has clearly been used for trolling???

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.cum), November 14, 1999.

Diane, please delete this and all such threads. Anyone else agree?

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), November 14, 1999.

Tip to concerned newbies to save time:

Skip Flint's posts and keep preparing.

Too late to seek the truth at this time. If your mind isn't made up to prepare yet, then it's never going to be made up so you might as well leave this forum.

We are all going to find out the truth very soon now, all at the same time, without Flint's help.

-- Chris (#$%^&@pond.com), November 14, 1999.

I second the motion. "Jims" intent seems to be to discredit the forum, and sucker people into his point of view with a sob story.

Since it's not possible for us to tar and feather the bastard, and we have no physical rail to run him out of town on, by all means, ban him and delete this thread.

-- Dr. Polymorph (theytrollmore@thanwedo.com), November 14, 1999.

And just where can one go to find the WHOLE truth about Y2k, Flint, www.y2k.gov?

I agree that balance is a good thing. But all of us have heard and continue to hear good news about Y2k on TV, in newspapers and magazines. I come here for the REST of the truth about Y2k. I don't believe everything I read here but I know I'm not going to find the whole truth about Y2k by just by watching TV and hearing sound bites from John Koskinen or whoever.

Trust me, Flint. We all heard this past summer that the power industry was supposedly 99% ready. It might even be close to being true by now. But Y2k is about a whole lot more than just good news about banks. The supply chain issue for example is something one almost never hears about on TV.

I would not be getting a balanced view of Y2k if the mass media was my only source of information about Y2k.

Stan!! I can't believe you offered this joker a steak! Got to pay attention to Diane. She indicated way up at the top that Jim=Lloyd, who likes to have conversations with himself. As soon as I saw that I blew this joker off. DON'T FEED THE TROLLS! Especially NOT STEAK!

-- Hawk (flyin@high.again), November 14, 1999.

Who knows?

Lloyd/Jim and I traded a few e-mails. This resulted, as I suggested...

Big apology

http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id= 001lwZ

Sometimes we do stupid things when were in pain. Id rather give Lloyd/Jim the benefit of the doubt.

Manytimes... life hurts. And its up to us to make different choices to change it.

(And its okay to hurt, but try not lashing out at others).

Then later... once youre past the pain... theres a time to get on with making good changes.

Flint -- Hey!!! Please See

Everything in moderation's post.

He/She hit the nail w/the hammer on that one. The "rosy" stories coming from the Media was the catalyst that got me digging deeper. I new of the problem early on and have been working on my little bit of Y2k Readiness, rather naively thinking that everyone else would be doing the same, how could they not based on the complexity and seriousness of the problem. I also new damn well that The Media spouting 98% compliant this or that practically over night was "horse patootie" I have come seeking information for a balanced analysis. Based on everything I have read/researched I have chosen the motto that "Prepartion is Prudent", and "Hope for the Best, Plan for the Worst".

-- yeehaa (karlacalif@aol.com), November 15, 1999.

I've been through two divorces, and I do not recommend it. After nearly 20 years of "war", I was finally able to make peace with my first ex. My second refused to bury the hatchet, and died hating me, which left me feeling horrible.

If there's anything you can do to avoid it, I urge you to do it.

-- Ron Schwarz (rs@clubvb.com.delete.this), November 15, 1999.

Why don't you just get a court order and post the names and real email addresses of everyone here?

Does it make you feel powerful that you can cross reference all the posts and find out who is posting under what handle?

Why don't you post some of the doomers who have about 5 handles a piece? My computer literate son said there is one in particular, a very revered poster, who has about 6 different handles.
