Y2K Disruptions Abroad May Hurt US

(CNS) - The United States may be prepared to deal with the Y2K computer bug, but the State Department says other countries are not - and that should concern everyone. At a Senate hearing focusing on global readiness for the year 2000, a top State Department official is expected to testify today that the so-called Y2K bug will probably disrupt the worldwide flow of goods and services, and maybe spark unrest in some countries. The remarks prepared for Congress were obtained by the Reuters news service. Jacquelyn Williams-Bridgers, the State Department's inspector general, reportedly will say "the global community is likely to experience varying `degrees of Y2K-related failures in every sector, in every region, and at every economic level." She says the scenario is "cause for concern," because in some unnamed countries, electricity, telecommunications, and other systems may fail - creating economic and social havoc that will have a serious impact on the United States and world economies. According to Reuters, Williams-Bridgers will call for contingency planning on a global scale at today's Senate hearing.
