Finally! They're Getting Fed Up With Trolls

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Forum Moderators : One Thread

There's a new post that everyone may want to comment on.

Calling All Forum Moderators

http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000wtF

Having experienced the "damage" the trolls can do to discussions, maybe now they'll accept "moderation" without YELLING CENSORSHIP!! (Ever notice the trolls yelled the loudest?)

*Big Sigh*

I posted a note there. Please add your 2 cents too.

Wow, that thread is getting a lot of "sick of trolls" concensus!

Consensus Good But Action Needs To Be Taken

While it is good to see more of a consensus form on the forum, the level of disgust is really rising among regulars, myself included. Someone (Diane, assistants, whatever) has to define a policy and get rid of the obvious crap. Pretty quick. That could involve blocking certain IPs altogether, BTW.

Some of us predicted this, of course (hardly rocket science). I'll also predict that even deletions won't stop the carnage BY ITSELF. There is going to have to be a consistent, visible period of clean-up, no matter how onerous to some who want to let everything go. After that (month or two, probably), things will probably calm down.

If they don't, I (others, I'm sure) could have a Greenspun-clone forum programmed in days, WITH simple, individual passwording (still support blind handles, etc), that would stop the nonsense in its tracks while allowing lots of anonymous fun. Including flaming and content "we" don't like. I am TOTALLY for giving vast content freedom.

When I find myself considering whether or not to punt (though I won't say anything on the forum), I suspect that's a bad sign.

Life is too short for this crap and I've got too much to do to prepare for Y2K and beyond.

We just talked to Diane 1/2 hour on phone. She's going to bed and needs to sleep. For immediate deleting page pshannon. We agree -- prune NOW !!!!

Russ is entirely correct - this isn't a one time thing - rules are NEVER entirely self-enforcing, and the standards will have to be maintained, especially during the initial assault which will occur following trollish discovery of that enforcement. If you do not, the forum is as good as dead.

Please, do what is right to clean-up this forum. I have an example to present for your consideration. Two years ago I was involved in the management of a professional athlete and a web site was put up with a 'Fan Club' discussion forum. It took a scant few weeks for the forum to evolve into a free-for-all of non-related ramblings and vicious name calling. Of course, none of this had anything whatsoever to do with the purpose of the forum. It just became a dumping ground for the mentally ill to gather and the real fans posted their displeasure and then disappeared altogether. We did not have the resources to have the forum monitored properly so the athlete decided to remove the forum from the site and start a 'members only' fan club forum. This required a registration process and a very nominal membership fee ($9.99). VOILA! The weirdo's went south and the forum became a quality source of information and sharing of thoughts. I realize this is not a practical solution for TB2K but something must be done before it is too late. I personally have come to admire and respect many of the first class contributors to this forum and feel short-changed at the direction the postings are taking. Whatever you can do will be an improvement and should be initiated ASAP!

My Regards,
Barry Jaynes

My reply...

Barry,

Thank you for your response.

We needed to wait until Forum participants themselves reached same conclusion.

Some trimming has begun. Will continue. Bear with us. We expect a flurry of troll reaction for awhile. Tough.

Just posted... WRONG Decker and Y2K Pro a.k.a. Norm and Vinnie.

WARNING: THIS POST WILL NOT BE EDITED FOR CONTENT OR LANGUAGE OR DELETED OR CENSORED!!

Posts that WILL BE deleted are the obvious ones:

 Profane/obscene posts
Personal information--address, phone, ISP, etc.--posted by troll < br> Using someone elses handle (including a regular poster, Sysop or Moderator)
 Useless dribble a.k.a. al-d, etc.

Stay tuned. Were working on simple GUIDELINES not RULES or CENSORSHIP.
