length of time for elevator shut down

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Elevator Problem Discussion : One Thread

I have no technical expertise but am a tenant living in a six story apartment house that has 54 units. We are being told that in order to "upgrade" (modernize) the elevator the machine will have to be shut down for four weeks. This seems excessive and will present a major problem for older or infirm residents. Is there anyone who can respond to this query regarding the excessive time and what other buildings have done to mitigate the hardships? The work that I know was done was replacement of worm gears and electronic work, about ten years ago.

A worried sixth floor resident....

The amount of time required depends entirely upon what is to be done.

"Modernization" is a very general and non-specific term.

For many common types of modernization, four weeks is very reasonable, especially if no overtime work is done (O.T. would involve extra cost, of course).
