Motor-Generator set idea

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Elevator Problem Discussion : One Thread

Hello, I'm not an engineer, more like a wannabe at the moment, since another occupation consumes my time. Anyway, I'm elevator consultant, and I've been thinking of the drive systems available, and all of them consume a rather large amount of elecerical power. I was thinking, would it be feasible to drive a MG set with a hydraulic motor, in place of an electerical one? You could use a propane/natural gas engine to supply the hydraulic pressure, or maybe even a electerical motor, then just have a electronically controled valve to the hydraulic motor to turn the generator. I would appreicate any thoughts regarding this idea.

so i just tell my customer the elevator ran out of gas? or your traction car ran out of hydro oil?

you see we dont use generators much anymore,,mostly vvvf, drives or scr, drive the where ya gonna put a gas powered engine on a 100 story bulding? not to mention the heat from a hydralic motor spinning a dc end of a generator at 1600 rpm,s we still use them and im sure there kept on some mods ,,,but your cost of electricity is cheap over 50 years and that generator is only a generator 50% of the time..the cost of a gas pawered genny would be pretty high.not to mention high cost to maintain.

Hydro drive

First of all an M.G. set puts out D.C.....Second a drive works on 3 pase A.C....So the concept does work...Gas or fuel can drive a motor generator set....but this is a technology that was used 100 years ago...Piston motors were used by leather belts to drive elevator motors and all building motors....

M.G.

An other point...if D.C. is available through an M.G. set, then D.C. is available to drive this M.G. set generator...If a D.C. generator for elevators exist, than it's getting its driving motor power from a D.C. power utility source..D.C. to D.C. generator...prior to that D.C. from the street...You can power a motor from fuel...but not a generator...

I know this doesn't sound related, but is there a way to run an RCA motor-generator set with an Otis dumbwaiter? The set was used for operating an RCA projector carbon arc lamp.

Projector M.G.

If it can handle the load..sure. I've seen projection generators before and they look capable of handling the load of a dumbwaitor.. Check the data tags on both pieces of equipment...The amperage on the generator {or kva..wattage} should be higher than the motor..

But doesn't make sense...

A dumbwaitor is a single speed machine and does not need speed regulating...Building power would be suffice...If you need d.c., just rectify it...but the generator would work, with very high electric bills...

will this system work for utilty vehicle which needs 15 kw power?

yes

Like you, I am not an engineer. I am working on a project where I need an 3000 plus rpm motor (used). Any information where I can find one or two motors would be helpful.

Thanks C.T.
