PA senate race in '06

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

I got a email from my friend in Harrisburg Pennsylvania saying the Democrats there might run a prolife candidate against Sen Rick Santorum next year. She said most Catholics would still vote for Santorum because he's more in line with the moral teaching of the church because of his party. My question is if both candidates match up on the life issues is it at all possible for Catholics to vote for a Democrat without it being a sin.

If both candidates match on the life issues, you should vote for the candidate who best represents the other issues you consider important.

Marjana, I agree partially with Paul M, but you have to go one step farther than what he advised, in my opinion. There is something that most would not call a "life issue" that must be evaluated too.

Here is a reliable "Voter's Guide for Serious Catholics" published by Catholic Answers, Inc.. You'll see that four of the five "non- negotiable" issues are what most people would call "life issues" (abortion, euthanasia, human cloning, and embryonic stem cell research). However, the last of the five is "Homosexual 'marriage.'" There could prove to be a difference on that between the Pennsylvania candidates, and you should vote accordingly. Even if there is not a difference, though, I would urge you to read the whole "Voter's Guide" for information on how to vote prudently.
