The literary life of Thingum Bob, esq.

I've just read it for the umpteenth time... this is an amazingly sidesplitting story...

Just need a few clues as to what exactly does the 'fine and sonorous' name Oppodeldoc refer to (surely not an emperor??!) and also who's the blind prophet who hails holy light.

Any answers will be appreciated.

Merely do a Netscape engine search of the name and you will find a lot of good information on the jokes. Oppodeldoc was a pretty much quack medicine everyone in Poe's time knew about. So all the theories about the name are jokes since the real meaning was very well known.

Thanx a bunch. I've just dug up a French edition and I see 'oppodeldoc' was a liniment with campher... I've also got it right about holy light... comes from Milton. And I've set the record straight for a number of other trivia. In a word, I'm all set!
