Milgram Study

greenspun.com : LUSENET : History & Theory of Psychology : One Thread

Hi, where can I find the historical context of the Milgram study. I would like to know some background information about why the study was done. It needs to be historical because I am doing an essay on controversial issues in the history of psychology.

Have a look at Thomas Blass' recent biography, _The Man Who Shocked the World: The Life and Legacy of Stanley Milgram_

Have you read the book length description by, I believe, Professor Milgram himself? I read it ~15-20 years ago, so my memory is hazy. But, his references may give you a clue. Also, www.apa.org should have some references. I'd also e-mail Professor Zimbardo at Stanford; he's a true expert on the history of psychology. Good luck. Wonderful topic.

In addition, an excellent resource is the website on Stanley Milgram at http://www.stanleymilgram.com/ . The website is maintained by Thomas Blass (Milgram's biographer). You can easily find some valuable information for you essay in the 'little known facts' section.
