warehouses in san francisco

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

I am in a california history class and am going to write about my dad's side of the family, which I know very little about. What I do know is that they owned a significant amount of warehouses in san francisco. I am working with the california historical society to get more answers, but was wondering if you know why there were so many warehouse in san francisco in the late 1800's and early 1900's. I am told that they were mainly for storage, but was wondering if there is any further historical information on these buildings.

You have a very famous warehouse surname. I think you know about the Haslett warehouse on Beach street built around 1880. If not, check out the comments in Woodbridges "S F Aarchitecture.".

Good luck in your research.
