Bishop Archibald Carey, Sr.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

Hello A.M.E. Folks... I hope all is well. I am interested to know if anyone knows of any manuscripts, archival, or newspaper documents regarding Bishop Archibald J. Carey, Sr. I will be writing a small bio on his life, and I need any information that I can get my hands on. I am aware that he was a pastor in Florida, Georgia, and Illinois - and at the Greater Institutional A.M.E. Church in Chicago. If anyone can give any information, it would be greatly appreciated. Rev. John Harper gave me the go-ahead to post to the list, so I hope you won't mind. Thank you in advance!

Andrea - How ironic you would ask about Bishop Carey. On yesterday I read a very interesting article in the July-Sept. 2004 issue of the AME Review about Bishop Carey and Ida B. Wells-Barnett. The author of the article is David Wills, Prof. of History at Amherst College. The article highlights Bishop Carey's life as a political rainmaker and religious leader in Chicago and describes the fascinating conflicts he endured with Ida Wells and one of my favorite AME Bishops, R.C. Ransom. The footnotes provide additional references about Bishop Carey. I highly recommend this article for your bio work. Since you live and work in Nashville you should have no problem contacting the editor of the AME Review, Vandy historian, Dennis Dickerson. QED
