There was a long great post down here somewhere about the effects of alcoholism being a better case than rabies. The missing time has been theorized by the changed state of Poe's attire to have been due to a vote fraud gang shanghaiing him, getting him drunk and leading him from poll to poll to cast multiple votes. No witness ever came forward to confirm that speculation. Some people assumed Poe had been simply bingeing in the tavern where he was found and in the lonely demise only the untrustworthy records of the attending doctor(who kept expanding the story on the lecture circuit reported Poe's last words- if any.

That Poe had given up drinking might have meant poisoning from the teas and waters. In any event, whatever transpired during the missing days, it was the weakness of lifelong alcohol abuse and its numerous disabilties that weakened Poe who was also prey to great stress and poverty after his wife's death.

The only answer that any of the people who study him have found to be true was that he was used as a multiple voter and drugged while he was drunk. Howver, I have also heard that he died from severe alochol poisoning.

Poe died drunk in an alley. A man that saw him the night he died said that Poe was standing outside a bar with a tin cup in his hand and as people passed him he would ask them " buddy can you spare a rhyme? " yuk yuk....
