Back to the drawing board?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Got very few takers when I suggested relocating back here for new year, but I think I'll amuse myself in this deserted area of cyberspace to see if it's reasonably stable.

NotBBC, if you hadn't noticed, has become unFUCKINGusable of late , incomparably more so than this place ever was. That is why hardly any bugger posts there even at the best of times, and the match threads have dwindled to maybe a couple of dozen.

Otherwise I suggest giving up NotBBC as a lost cause and commandeering the dotcom-afiliated forum at http://www.newcastle-online.com/nufcforum/viewforum.php?f=1 . There's a few ready2go-isms about it, but it's not that bad. (They at tend to keep to just the one match thread instead of the R2G match-header-list.) We might just raise the tone.

As long as we all go in the same direction I don't have too many objections. This place is still pretty slow at times so isn't really usable.

The various incarnations since Communicata have always had a common theme that anybody who got abusive got ignored and any non believers were similarly non abusive.

The only other alternative is set up ourselves which is at a cost I suppose. Rob S works hard on the NOTBBC forums and is being let down by the infrastructure supplier.

Subject: Back to the drawing board?

What did people go back to before drawing boards were invented?

The layout of Greenspun isn't half as good as the layout on NOTBBC. What is the problem with NOTBBC exactly - and can we help to rectify it in any way? Is it a financial solution or an admin solution?

My memory tells me Greenspun became much worse than NOTBBC is now when we eventually abandoned ship. It is bloody irritating not to be able get on when you want to, but I'm not certain moving back here would prove successful.

I've tried the .com bbs and didn't like it at all - too much like RTG for me. I used to use the TOTT board from time to time, but found that one unedifying too.

To be honest, I feel we should have a clear understanding on which site is to be our back up when NOTBBC is down. We could try decamping here and see what happens, or we could just go to the board that macbeth set up - "NUFC Chit-Chat" - which actually I find fine.

I believe the main problem with NotBBC is one of timing. I dunno, but suspect it is hosted out of the US (despite the "uklinux" portion??), and as such, may be experiencing maintenance outages at around 9:00am each morning and at weekends - especially this weekend.

I don't know what else is hosted on the same server, but of it is "business orientated", then out-of-hours is typically the time that service will be taken away for backups, upgrades etc etc. If this is in a different time-zone to the rest of us, then that is something we either have to accept or look elsewhere.

I we were paying for the service, I would expect a service-level agreement, bt as we piggy back on the godwill of others, it is difficult to complain too much.

Does anybody have Red Rob's email address? Perhapos he could outline what we may and may not expect - then we could make a decision........but unlike the decicion making skills of the NUFC Chariman, I suggest we have an alternative lined up in advance!

don't you love old threads!

"Fenerbache can take a flying leap. Why is it that as soon as we seem to be getting some top players, or top performances out of our players, they're suddenly being rumoured to be leaving? arrrrgghhh! Sorry, just need to vent..while also starting a new thread. Don't mind me, allergy medication has made me very edgy this afternoon(not to mention various other little stresses of the day) 8-}

#10m quid - he has to go. They'd be mad to pay that for someone so frequently crocked and we'd be mad to keep him

I wouldn't let big Dunc go! Bobby may be looking to bring in new players though, so we will just have to sit tight.

Screach -

this was the email exchange I had with Rob in October:

------------------ > I just wondered if there was any update about the downtime on NOTBBC? I > sense people are drifting away from the UNUFC forum and someone's set up > an alternative site because of all the problems - is there an end in > sight or is it likely to be like this indefinitely?

I honestly don't know - UK Linux seem to have lost interest in fixing the problem, so unless someone gives me enough money to buy my own server I can't see there being a fix. I might try and get a backup system of my own running soon though

Rob ---------------------

So - anyone know how much a server costs?

Dan

Its not the cost of the hardware rather the rental of the bandwidth etc.

We had this discussion a few years ago as Communicata was being ripped from under us. They were being hit by our bandwidth usage

Have you got Robs email address - can you send it to jhepple at gmail.com ?

I'd be interested to know how much bandwidth we're using when it is working.

Josh
