Does the Pope have authority over the Eastern rites, or does he only have authority over the Latin Rite?

The Short Anser is "Yes". They are in full communion wihhte See of rme and Under the Pontif of Rome, known today as the Pope.

It's ironic when you think about it; the Pope in fact has authority over every Christian in the world. This is without question.

Not many sectarian Chrisitans will ever admit this. Nor the orthodox persuasions or ''born agains''. But it's the truth.

Jesus was right as usual. They rejected the Master and the servant cannot expect more than what the Master receives.

The Byzantine rite is in full communion with the pope. I recommend going to a Byzantine rite mass at least once in your life. The Greek and Russian Orthodox churches are not in communion with the pope and are considered to be in schism.

There are more rites than just the Latin rite who are in full communion with the pope.

I knew that they were still in communion with the Church, but I read a website that made me think that they had different leaders, and a different head. Can the Pope be from an Eastern Rite?

Cameron, I don't know much about it, but I think there are patriarchs for each of the Eastern rites, and the Pope is over them. He is also the patriarch of the Latin rite.

Emily and Cameron, you got me to researching.

Here is more than you'd ever want to know about rites, patrarchites and the Eastern Catholic Churches.

If I read it correctly, Emily has it right. Each of the Eastern Catholic churches in union with the pope (Byzantine, Chaldean, Coptic, Abyssinian, Syrian, Malabar, Armenian, and Maronite) have their own patriarch who recognizes the authority of the pope. As the Catholic Encyclopedia puts it, "Eastern-Rite Catholics are Catholics who do not belong to the Roman patriarchate."
