You raise a fundamental question, whose answer is no longer "Republican". My generation has formed a Neo-Conservative Republican platform which has had some platform planks replaced, and others removed:

No longer will the Republican Party be aligned with Christian Fundamentalist values or spokespersons. Americans WANT the separation of Church and State, and the Church would just LOVE to be able to influence political policy.

Racism and sexism no longer have a place in the Republican Party.

Protect American interests at all costs. America First.

If military action is need to support any of the above, then USE IT.

Do you really think the republicans will abandon the religeous fundamentalist? They got 75 percent of the Christian vote. For the life of me I cannot understand why. Democrats actually help the poor and preach tolerance something my savior approves of. Those without sin may cast the first stone.

I think the original poster wants somebody to say the GOP is the party of moral values which in my opinion is just as lame as nixon being the law and order candidate. Who is against law and order as long as the law is applied equally to all Americans? I do believe in seperation of church and state. I believe in a moment of silence in school so kids can meditate, pray or vegitate. I don't believe in removing the 10 commandments from courts. Most of our laws are based on the same principals. We had a situation in town where at some town meeting they would start with a Christian prayer but there was one problem. One of them followed the wiccan religeon(witchcraft) and he put up a fuss. Everytime he would do some wiccan prayer which include his religeous moaning while the christian prayer was said. I think a sensible solution would to start the prayer in the parking lot and then do the meeting. Of course it turned into I have a right to be Christian attitude and you are sick to be a witch which is against our constitution. We cannot escape religeon in politics. If the most sensible person in the world was running for president and he was a muslim how many votes would that person get? How many votes would Liberman get? I consider Liberman's religeon the most racist and intolerant religeon of all time. Read the talmud if you want to get my drift. Modern day Israel is in actuality everything that we as Americans should shun. Treating arabs like second class citizens. bullying, manipulating and killing children and adults as a tactic to systematically drive them into the sea.Well thank God the bought and paid for press doesn't show you what really goes on there. My ex wife told me about this. she was there in the 80's. I have seen some disturbing footage of Israel every day life on support the truth.com and as an American it sickens me that we support this through our tax dollars. We spend 6 times as much money on Israel,a country the size of connecticut and rhode Island, than the entire contenent of Africa. Yes, seperation of church and state is good and yes I believe in Jesus.

Please, the Republican Party is going to milk this evangelical bullshit for all it's worth. Karl Marx was wrong about a lot of things, but he was right on the money when he said that religion is the oppiate of the masses. It is used to control so many people. Doesn't mean religion itself is completely wrong, because it isn't, but leaders abuse it and use it to control people. Republicans are using gay marriage, abortion, and stem cell research (abortion, I care about, but the other two I couldn't give a rat's ass about) to distract Americans from issues that actualy matter, like the fact that their jobs are being sold overseas even as they cast their ballot for "values". Or the fact that 1,300 soldiers have died in Iraq for NOTHING. Or the fact that our President is a lying crook. But Republicans know that as long as they can play up these issues on election year (while pretty much ignoring them the other three years), millions of people will come out and cast their vote, regardless of all other issues. They'll vote for a spoiled rich kid who grew up and had everything handed to him, including the Presidency, who doesn't give a damn about our troops, who lies through his teeth and shows no misgivings about it, who cares about no one but himself...they'll vote for him because of his superior moral values. Please. Bush is about as Christian as Buddha. But that doesn't stop him from exploiting religion and warping it to his perverted agenda. KOBE, like it or not, the Republican Party has seen that being the party of fundamentalism WORKS, and you can expect them to stay that way for a loong time.

Karl Marx was wrong about a lot of things, but he was right on the money when he said that religion is the oppiate of the masses.

Remember though that he was writing before Television. Nowadays people sit for 4 hours or more in front of their t.v.'s, & I think that has a much more profound effect on people's outlook.

No, values do matter. What do you think our laws are based on if not values? What is our fiscal policy based on if not values? foreign policy? Any policy? Nope, values are VERY important.

You know, I think all politicians lie to some degree, but think that Bush truly is a faithful Christian. I don't personally know the man, but have met people who have hit rock bottom on drugs or alcohol and have found God and turned their lives around. (I've met others who hit rock bottom and stayed there, too). Anyway, regardless of his political faith, I think his personal faith is for real.
