This place is great!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

You can find all sorts of bad logic models, hysterical religious rantings, and outright paranoia!

Does anyone else find this funny?

If you're really interested in researching Y2k, make sure you check out some of the more official sites like the ones at this link.

This place -- TimeBomb 2000 -- was a blog for people who thought it was a good idea to have contingency plans in case not all Y2k fixes would be ready by the January 1, 2000 deadline. As in life itself, some of these bloggers were more logical and some were less logical.

We must not be reading the same thing.

Grab an half dozen threads at random and tell me how people on this site thought it was 'just in case' y2k was bad!

"its too late"

"it can't be fixed"

"I can't get people to 'GI'" (there's a religious overtone...'convert' the unbelievers)

"the gov lies about readiness"

etc. etc. etc.

...uh huh....sure....this was for middle of the road people...

bleh.

Forum "about" policy:

http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/policy.tcl?topic=TimeBomb%202000%20% 28Y2000%29

"This forum is intended for people who are concerned about the impact of the Y2000 problem on their personal lives, and who want to discuss various fallback contingency plans with other like-minded people. It's not intended to provide advice/guidance for solving Y2000 problems within an IT organization."

Also of interest...

One hundred random threads

It sure looks like the 'about' policy fell by the wayside, doesn't it!

I'm not sure what google has to do with this site, but you keep mentioning it.

At one point, I thought this site might be a parody, but I see that isn't true. People actually think and act like this. No matter how much positive information was published, some just didn't want to believe it...even AFTER Jan 1 came and went.

Amazing.

Merry Christmas. Happy 2005!

this place isn't all that funny after all.

The talk of cannabalism was nausiating.

Descriptions of shooting looters, trading food for sex, etc.

ugh.

Cannibalism, shooting looters, and trading food for sex? It makes me wonder just what you're actually researching if those are the kinds of threads you're looking for. The vast majority of threads on this forum have nothing to do with those topics.

Maybe you're the kind of person who thinks it's OK to hold all members of a group responsible for comments made by just a few members of that group. That's an old trick in politics. And it's a trick that's been used over the years to marginalize all kinds of people--blacks, gays, foreigners...you get the idea.

I sincerly apoligize for even logging in to this blog.

There are some deeply disturbing things said on this forum, and contrary to what was just posted...UNAPPOSED by Ed Yourdon (and/or a moderating team).

If it was truly a small sub-group, they would have been done away with. Instead, it appears a small group of optimists was done away with.

Keep in mind that the internet then is not what it is now. Any attempt at "moderating" quickly lead to cries of censorship.

There was also a sort of heady fever caused by the sudden ability to comunicate in this way. Unfortunately many people used this new freedom to say things they would never say in person.

The result was chaos.

A ridiculous amount of credibility was given to anonymous posters with "tips". Most forum participants have become much more sophisticated now.

However, there were thoughtful exchanges and occaisional acts of true community.

Gawd. Like some kind of bad dream, come back. And what the hell is a "blog"? Truly makes one lament the decline of the classics...

So this place is still open to messages. Timebomb200 spun off and is now moderated by Dennis Olson. They are still talking about doomsday and it's just around the corner. Then there's Mutters, CurEvents, Uncle Bob's, and Slimebomb. Fun places to hang out and there's many who originally posted here, who are still posting on the forums mentioned.
