For once the two preceding answers do a neat ssummary of influences. The writers(the Romantic writers of Poe's time especially) thinkers etc. And then the personal life events and people. You can see it is necessary to at least skim through a biography to do it justice. Unhappiness, surrogate mothers, lack of father, West Point, teachers, the Romantics who matched his mood more than it often did those writers themselves.

His life experenceses his dreams and everything around him. this inclueds the whitness of his mothers death, the falling in love whith is second cousin and the death of his wife and second cousin, the trips of morphin and the or alchol, and his constant struggle for sainity and life.
