the color red is so significant in The Masque of the Red Death because that's what his life was plagued with. The red death of tuberculosis. His mother, step mother and his cousin/wife Virginia died from tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is the lung disease in which one coughs up blood, which is red, hence, the red death.
