Where did he live? Good question, various places. Castel Sant Angelo was the fortress of the papacy, the vatican was another place, for a short time the vatican HQ was moved to france to avoid a political struggle. The pope has lived in various standards of living throughout history including those which varied in the middle ages from poverty to moderately well living, but all that the pope owns is not his, but the church's.

what was his status in society? same as today i guess, servant of the servants of God. Leader of the church which Christ founded on earth.

What did he do for the church? same as today, infallable interpretor of the truth of God, embodiment of the apostolic power, provided leadership and sheparding.

How did the commoners view him? same as today, some with fear, some with love, some with respect, some with hatred.
