On November 17, we members of the Catholic Church family honor, in a special way, the following friends of God -- "saints" and "blesseds" whose souls are now in heaven:

St. Elizabeth of Hungary [Erzsebet] (Hungarian [but may have been born in Bratislava, Slovakia], princess, mother of four, widow, Franciscan tertiary, champion of the poor and sick, died at about age 24 in 1231 [canonized 1235])
St. Rose-Philippine Duchesne of Grenoble (French, Visitation sister and later missionary sister in the Society of the Sacred Heart in Missouri and other states, died at age 83 in 1852 [beatified 1940, canonized 1988]) [On U.S. “particular calendar”]

Sts. Acisclus and Victoria of Cordova (Spanish, brother and sister, martyred by arrows in 304)
Sts. Alphaeus of Caesarea and Zachaeus of Gadara (Palestinian, lector and deacon, martyred by beheading in 303)
St. Anianus of Orléans (French, bishop, d. 453)
St. Dionysius of Alexandria (Egyptian, patriarch [bishop], died at about age 75 in 265)
St. Eugene of Florence (Italian, deacon, d. 422)
St. Gregory of Clermont [baptized George Florentius] (French, historian, wrote lives of saints, bishop of Tours, died at about age 54 in 594)
St. Gregory Thaumaturgus of Neocaesarea ["The Wonder Worker"] (from Asia Minor [now called Turkey], student of Origen, bishop, theologian, miracle-worker, died at about age 57 c. 270)
St. Hilda of Northumbria (British, Benedictine abbess, died at about age 66 in 680)
St. Hugh of Avalon [Hugues] (French, Carthusian abbot in England, bishop of Lincoln, died at about age 60 in 1200 [canonized 1220])
St. Hugh of Noara [Ugo] (Sicilian, Cistercian abbot, c. 1170)
Bl. Jane of Segna [Giovanna] (Italian, shepherdess, virgin, died at about age 62 in 1307 [beatified 1798])
St. Namasius of Vienne (French, bishop, c. 559 [canonized 1903])
Holy Martyrs of Paraguay (Jesuit priests, missionaries mainly in Paraguay, martyred by indigenous peoples in Brazil in 1628 [beatified 1934, canonized in 1988])
----- St. Alphonse Rodriguez of Segovia [Alonso] and St. Rocco Gonzalez of Asuncion [Roque] (Spanish and Paraguayan, hacked to death by tomahawk at about ages 30 and 52)
----- St. John de Castillo of Belmonte [Juan] (Spanish, stoned to death at about age 32)
St. Raverranus of Séez (French, bishop, 8th century)
Bl. Salome of Skala [Salomea] (Polish, married at 13 to prince of Hungary, widow, Poor Clare abbess, died at about age 57 in 1268 [beatified 1673])
