Iraq - Another Vietnam?

Iraq - Another Vietnam?

In the summer of 2003, fear mongers began talking of the supposed "quagmire" in Iraq. Many pundits expressed concern that by liberating Iraq, we have gotten ourselves into another Vietnam. Well, I have just one word for that notion: nonsense! There are so many differences between Vietnam and Iraq that only someone who is not thinking clearly or who did not live through the 60s and 70s could sincerely make such a claim. Here are a few of the major differences:

In Vietnam, the major fighting lasted nearly a decade. In Iraq, it was over in three weeks. In Vietnam, there was never a clear winner until the U.S. pulled out. In Iraq, the winner was never in doubt.

In Vietnam, the enemy received significant support from other countries. No country openly supported Saddam Hussein.

In Vietnam, the terrain made finding and fighting the enemy extremely difficult. Only our desire to minimize civilian casualties makes finding the enemy difficult in Iraq. That is a much smaller hurdle to overcome.

In Vietnam, the enemy was comprised of millions of soldiers determined to wait us out and grind us down. They fervently supported their cause. In Iraq, there are very few who support Saddam Hussein, even fewer who believe in his cause. The enemy is much less determined in this battle.

In Vietnam, U.S. soldiers were dying at the rate of 20 each day. In the summer of 2003, the rate was 1 per day. It has bounced up and down since then, but it is still nowhere close to what it was in Vietnam.

In Vietnam, American soldiers were drafted into the military - they had no reasonable choice. Today our military is comprised entirely of volunteers.

In Vietnam, the military commanders in the field misled their superiors in Washington, providing a more positive picture than actually existed. That is simply not possible today - not to the degree that it occurred in Vietnam.

In Vietnam, those we were trying to liberate were ambivalent. They did not care about communism or democracy. They just wanted to be left alone. At least Ho Chi Minh left his people alone - for the most part. Only those whom Saddam Hussein bribed wanted to keep things as they were. The Iraqi people craved freedom from Hussein.

Prior to Vietnam, our history was one of complete victory. We had never lost a war. We thought we could bomb our way to victory. By 2003, we knew better. Today we have 76 million military advisors warning our leaders that we cannot and will not get bogged down in another Vietnam.

In the fall of 2003, John McCain, a Vietnam veteran and U.S. senator, wrote, "Iraq is not Vietnam. There is no popular, anti-colonial insurgency in Iraq. Our opponents, who number only in the thousands in a country of 23 million, are despised by the vast majority of Iraqis. The Iraqi insurgents do not enjoy the kind of sanctuary North Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos provided. They do not have a superpower patron. These murderers cannot carry the banner of Iraqi nationalism, as Ho Chi Minh did in Vietnam for decades."

According to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall web page (www.thewall-usa.com), 47,386 American servicemen died as a result of hostile action in Vietnam. At the current rate, the death toll from Iraq's guerrilla war will reach Vietnam's level sometime in the year 2200.

Our problem in Iraq was that we won too quickly - the enemy ran away before we could conquer all of it. What we see in the spring of 2004 are remnants of the enemy - those that we missed in the quick takeover. They will fade in time. This is no Vietnam!

In Vietnam, the major fighting lasted nearly a decade. In Iraq, the insurgency (which has delivered more fatalities to the coaltion side than the war itself!) is still going on. In Vietnam, there was never a clear winner until the U.S. pulled out. In Iraq, UP TILL NOW, whoever the winner might be, he is definitely not doing a good job at containing the violence, which now have spread itself to more than 85% of the cities.

In Vietnam, the enemy received significant support from other countries. In Iraq, the insurgency is joined by Al Qaeda fighters, other religious and political radical groups wanting power and domination over Iraq, the remnants of the X-regime, and numerous newly-formed haters of the US dominion because of irresponsible bombings from the American air forces. No country openly supported Saddam Hussein, but why the hell does that matter??

In Vietnam, the terrain made finding and fighting the enemy extremely difficult. In Iraq, the mobility and maneuver skills of tightly packed, and well organized insurgents, using extremely efficient weapons that deliver costly blows at almost no notice to its enemy, made the war EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. It is like fighting against a desert: you hear the noise, you see the smoke, but there is noone to blame for. Our desire to minimize civilian casualties better be of major concern in any war anywhere. Since "we" claim to be the peace maker, we better make peace and not smash it. Apparently, this is not even the case in Iraq << freakin' murderers.

In Vietnam, the enemy was comprised of millions of soldiers determined to wait us out and grind us down. They fervently supported their cause. In Iraq, the enemy is comprised of possible HUNDGREDS OF MILLIONS of Muslim from all over the world, and BILLIONS of non- MUSLIM, non-religious individuals who detest the injustice of the war, active or non-active, who are DETERMINED to sway the American advancement upon the Muslim frontier, either through directly indulging in terrorism or indirectly funding and supporting it, or through other passive means such as peaceful or non-peaceful demonstrations, most severely through infliction of pain upon themselves to stir public attention and mass media coverage, or through political manifestations of difference of opinion on a national scale in many of America's former allies such as senior memebers of the EU, and utterly bitter suppression of hatred for America that is held back because of international pressure and the American dominion of the world politcally, geographically and militaristically.

In Vietnam, U.S. soldiers were dying at the rate of 20 each day. In the summer of 2003, the rate was 1 per day. It has bounced up and down since then, but it is still nowhere close to what it was in Vietnam. This better be the case, because American claims so fervently that they have contained the violence.

In Vietnam, American soldiers were drafted into the military - they had no reasonable choice. Today our military is comprised entirely of volunteers, whose determination to fight for a senseless war is deteriorating grippingly at an increasingly rate. It is also comprised of other members of the coalition whose main motive was the economic and political support for their economy that has been thirsting for American dollars for a while.

In Vietnam, the military commanders in the field misled their superiors in Washington, providing a more positive picture than actually existed. That appears to STILL be the case today, as media coverage was reduced to a minimum where violence was possible, and exploded to a massive verbose lie when it is not. The toppling of the statue of Saddam Hussein is a typical example: the photo shows hordes of people cheering and showing their satisfaction, whereas in reality these were chosen and paid citizens, numbering anywhere between 50 to 90, circled by American troops to have appeared much larger, and helped by the angling of the photo to induce a sizable effect.

That is exactly why they fight their asses off to get rid of the people who helped them get rid of Saddam. Funny heh?

Prior to Vietnam, our history was one of complete victory. We had never lost a war. We thought we could bomb our way to victory. By 2003, we knew better. Today we have 76 million military advisors warning our leaders that we cannot and will not get bogged down in another Vietnam. And still we can't contain Iraq can we? History has a funny way of looking down to us and grabbing us by the collar no matter how hard we try to hide.

These murderers cannot carry the banner of Iraqi nationalism, as Ho Chi Minh did in Vietnam for decades...but now, it seems that there is a rising and popular anti-colonial insurgency in Iraq. Our x- opponents, the x-soldiers of the Saddam Regime are still in existence and perservering in their fight against us. Many and many more have begun to carry the banner of Iraqie nationalism, and there rising support seems unstoppable]"

According to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall web page (www.thewall- usa.com), 47,386 American servicemen died as a result of hostile action in Vietnam. At the current rate, the death toll from Iraq's guerrilla war will reach Vietnam's level sometime in the year 2200, if we assume it will grow at a linear rate, which, as we already can see, is not.

Our problem in Iraq was that we won too quickly - the enemy ran away before we could conquer all of it. What we see in the spring of 2004 are remnants of the enemy - those that we missed in the quick takeover. They will fade in time. This is no Vietnam, but will soon be if we continue with this no-Vietnam mindset.

Tôi chỉ thấy tức cười chuyện này thôi: Bây giờ th́ Bush huênh hoang nói: "THe world is a better place without Saddam Hussein[, that is why we invaded Iraq]" Nhưng tại sao khi tŕnh bày với đại diện LHQ th́ ổng lại không dùng lí do này để biện minh cho cuôc chiến tranh của ḿnh??? V́ lí do này KHÔNG THỎA ĐÁNG.

"I hear there's rumors on the Internets that we're going to have a draft."

"The truth of that matter is, if you listen carefully, Saddam would still be in power if he were the president of the United States, and the world would be a lot better off."

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

"When a drug comes in from Canada, I wanna make sure it cures ya, not kill ya... I've got an obligation to make sure our government does everything we can to protect you. And one — my worry is that it looks like it's from Canada, and it might be from a third world." ~What do canadians think of this one?

"I cut the taxes on everybody. I didn't cut them. The Congress cut them. I asked them to cut them."

"Obviously, I pray every day there's less casualty."

"There is no such thing necessarily in a dictatorial regime of iron- clad absolutely solid evidence. The evidence I had was the best possible evidence that he had a weapon."

"I'm not the expert on how the Iraqi people think, because I live in America, where it's nice and safe and secure." ~ no wonder you understand nothing of the war

"More Muslims have died at the hands of killers than — I say more Muslims — a lot of Muslims have died — I don't know the exact count — at Istanbul. Look at these different places around the world where there's been tremendous death and destruction because killers kill."

"See, free nations are peaceful nations. Free nations don't attack each other. Free nations don't develop weapons of mass destruction." (for example, the United States)

"I'm also not very analytical. You know I don't spend a lot of time thinking about myself, about why I do things." ~ oh my god...

"I'm the commander — see, I don't need to explain — I do not need to explain why I say things. That's the interesting thing about being president." - OH MY GOD...

"The problem with the French is that they don't have a word for entrepreneur." ~ yes they do! and guess which country the word "entrepreneur" comes from?

"I just want you to know that, when we talk about war, we're really talking about peace."

"Do you have blacks, too?" OHH... MY.... GOD

"And so, in my State of the — my State of the Union — or state — my speech to the nation, whatever you want to call it, speech to the nation — I asked Americans to give 4,000 years — 4,000 hours over the next — the rest of your life — of service to America. That's what I asked — 4,000 hours."

"My administration has been calling upon all the leaders in the — in the Middle East to do everything they can to stop the violence, to tell the different parties involved that peace will never happen."

"I've coined new words, like, misunderstanding and Hispanically." ~ uhh...one of them is NOT new, the other is wrong,

"We're concerned about AIDS inside our White House — make no mistake about it." ~ hehe

"If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier — so long as I'm the dictator." ~ Hopeless

"It is clear our nation is reliant upon big foreign oil. More and more of our imports come from overseas." = attack iraq? go figure,

"The best way to relieve families from time is to let them keep some of their own money." ~jesus,

"Well, I think if you say you're going to do something and don't do it, that's trustworthiness." OH MY GOD!

"We cannot let terrorists and rogue nations hold this nation hostile or hold our allies hostile" ~what?

"I think anybody who doesn't think I'm smart enough to handle the job is underestimating."

"I don't want to win? If that were the case, why the heck am I on the bus sixteen hours a day, shaking thousands of hands, giving hundreds of speeches, getting pillared in the press and cartoons and still staying on message to win?"

"I understand small business growth. I was one."

"What I am against is quotas. I am against hard quotas, quotas they basically delineate based upon whatever. However they delineate, quotas, I think vulcanize society. So I don't know how that fits into what everybody else is saying, their relative positions, but that's my position.'' ~ where did you get your university degree??
