Those Possession Movies And Novels.

What are your thoughts about movies/books dealing with possesion and exorcism?

For example: The Exorcist and The Omen.

They claim to be based on real accounts and to have had realiable consultants for the storyline.

For me, The Exorcist dealt more about the power of God over all of evil. Satan can destroy a man when he is down; God pulls him up.

What about she devil? With Fraser and Hurley.

That one had a good message: your soul belongs to God.

The Exorcist was based on a true story of diabolical possession that happened to a little boy (not a girl) in Maryland in the 1940's. Fr. Gabriele Amorth, who is the chief exorcist in the diocese of Rome (the Pope's diocese), has said that the movie is like a documentary about his line of work.

The Omen was a bit more far-fetched, and not about possession at all.

The consultant for the movie,The Exorcist, was a Jesuit priest. Not everything was revealed in the movie. Some secrets still remain.

The first time I was the movie, it scared the living daylights out of me. I was all alone watching it after the midnight hour, not to smart.

"They claim to be based on real accounts and to have had realiable consultants for the storyline."

Yes, well, "based on" is a relative term. "The Last Temptation of Christ" is supposedly "based on" the life of Christ, and The DaVinci Code is supposedly "based on" historical facts. When a writers "base" a book or film on something, it often means that they take the initial subject matter and then portray whatever will make the work popular (= profitable).

I'm beginning to spell words backwards. Yikes! "was" ? I meant the first time I "saw' the movie.

Well, yes I do consider the "based on a true story" technique of story telling and movie making. It does sell tickets. But, the problem is in seperating fact from fiction.

It was interesting how the Catholic Church was portrayed in The Exorcist. The scientific view made the Church out to have an embarrasing problem still tucked away in the closet regarding exorcisms. Yet, at the same time the scientific world is stumped and baffled for a solution to the little girl's major problem. And, it seems like many of the movies I've seen with priest-characters have them on the edge of losing their faith. I guess this technique is interesting for the audience.

The most impactful and focal point of The Exorcist was the scene where Fr. Karous is celebrating Communion. It was like the moment of truth , as both the priest and the audience have arrived at the only truth and solution to all of man's answers against evil--Christ. That's really what I found to be the real message in the movie. Spinning heads and bloody crab-crawls down a flight of stairs sell popcorn.

(OFF-Topic)

Braindead , The Dentist are a few of my favourite horror movies

(BACK Topic)

To be honest , if there is a message "build in" , for most of the movies , I don't care , I only watch them pure as entertainment !!

I've seen the exorcist and the oman , not my kind of movies !!

The spoof of the exorcist , Reposessed , was good , but not great !!

But serious:

What are your thoughts about movies/books dealing with possesion and exorcism?

Sorry , but I never have seen a possessed person , so I can't tell you about !! __ But counting on books and movies , I don't believe in it !!

Salut & Cheers from a NON BELIEVER:

(I'll ask anyway.)

Have you seen The Passion Of The Christ?

Was it only entertaining, Laurent?

The New Rite of Exorcism apparently doesn't work. What a surprise.
