On October 25, we members of the Catholic Church family honor, in a special way, the following friends of God -- "saints" and "blesseds" whose souls are now in heaven:

Bl. Albert of Sassoferrato [Alberto] (Italian, Camaldolese monk, d. 1330 [beatified 1837])
Sts. Chrysanthus and Daria of Rome (Italian, married couple, martyred by being buried alive c. 283)
Sts. Crispian and Crispin of Rome (Italian, noblemen [brothers], shoemakers, evangelizers of Gaul [France], martyred by beheading c. 286)
Sts. Cyrinus, Claudius, and Antoninus, of Rome (Italian, martyred by beheading in 304)
St. Dulcardus of Micy (French, monk, hermit, d. 584)
Holy Martyrs of England and Wales (English and Welsh ... 40 people [priests, religious brothers, lay men and women] ... representative of about 300 people known to have suffered and died for the holy Catholic faith, at the hands of their government, between 1535 and 1679 [7 beatified in 1886, 33 in 1929, all canonized in 1970])
---------- In most of the world, the Holy Martyrs of England and Wales may be commemorated as a group today. The new 1993 particular calendar of liturgical celebrations in England and Wales calls for these 40 canonized people to be commemorated on May 4, along with 85 beatified people -– all 125 being collectively called “The English Martyrs.” At this forum, the 85 beatified martyrs born in England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales will be named in the thread for May 4.
--------- Today’s 40 saints are among the thousands of Catholics who suffered for continuing to profess the true faith and religious submission to the pope, following King Henry VIII's promulgation of the schismatic Act of Supremacy, which declared that the monarch of England was the head of the "Church of England." Most of the canonized martyrs were tortured and then drawn, hanged, and quartered (exceptions being noted below). The 40 saints were executed at sixteen places (14 in England, 2 in Wales), though almost half of them gave their lives at the infamous London site known as Tyburn. (At Tyburn, over 40,000 condemned people were killed between 1196 and 1783.)
