ATI Multimedia Center 7.0.x

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

The ATI multimedia Center 7.0.x "Library" function fails to initialize, thus the program won't start. ATI does acknowledge this is an issue with that version and some systems. See their article: http://mirror.ati.com/support/infobase/4020.html I've never been able to start the media library and ATI wont support my problem. They say I must buy MMC 8.1 or higher. I refuse to buy more software out of principle because of their lack of support for this problem. Now my question to anyone out there: Who can make me a copy of orifinal CD with 8.1 or higher on it? Thanks...

I recently installed Windows XP on a new hard drive and I installed whatever MMC is current on it. I refused to pay for MMC either. It's not very clear on the ATI website, but if you don't need to play DVDs through MMC's player, you actually don't have to pay for the upgrade. The cost of the upgrade only pays for ATI's DVD player. Everything else is free and works fine. Since there is no real reason to play DVDs through ATI's player if you have WinDVD or PowerDVD, which are both much better players, why don't you just download the latest version of MMC and upgrade? The library function you asked about will work on the newest MMC upgrade for free. I'm not a big fan of ATI because of stuff like this. They also don't have very good technical support. ATI uses software encoding to record video, which puts a lot of strain on your PC and I think is an inferior and unnecessary way to record video. Hardware encoding, which is used by companies such as Hauppage and Dazzle, is a superior approach.

Thats for your reply. The only reason I want to get ATI's Library function going is cause I went and recorded an important tv show in their .vcr format and I want to convert it to avi or mpg. But cant without using their convet util in Library. The latest MMC is version 9. I downloaded it and tried to install it but it asked for incersion of version 8 original CD, which I dont have. I have ver 7. Their site seems to say you have to buy their ver 9. Hey, if you have and stand alone converter let me know. Or if you have ATI's version 8 CD let me know. Thanks for your help.
