In the US it is a 17 character VIN

1st character is the country of manufacture 2nd character identifies the manufacturer 3rd character identifies vehicle type 4th through 8th identify features 9th character is used to verify VIN accuracy 10th character is the model year 11th character identifies the plant that assembled the vehicle Last six characters are the serial number of the vehicle
