Did Edgar Allen Poe ever have an actual job? what was his profession? Rumor has it that he was a scientist.. is that true?

Poe was not a professional scientist. However, his mind was first- rate. When he applied it to science, he produced "Eureka." This writing anticipated some 20th century scientific theories. It also contained many interesting scientific-philosophical speculations. Through the use of pure reason, he was able to explain large-scale phenomena.

Otherwise, he held jobs as writer, editor, and critic for various magazines.
