DVD uses MPEG2 (better compression), VCD uses MPEG1.

DVD is normally double the resolution of VCD (both vertically and horizontally).

4.7GB DVD-R media has 6.5x larger capacity compared to 700MB CDR. Double sided DVDs have even larger capacity.

VCD bit rate is fixed at 1150bps. DVD can supports variable bit-rate. DVD can be encoded using 2-pass VBR for best quality given available capacity.

It's possible to encode DVD at high bit rate for maximum quality, or if you can live with lower quality, stretch a single 4.7GB DVD-R to 8 hours or more. :)
