Instead of a late charge, it's recommended we rent for an extra 30 minutes. Will be then get charged for 30 minutes or 1 hour? (e.g. if an hour rental is $8.50, what the charge for 30 minutes?)

The one hour minimum is only for the first hour of rental. If you need to, you can extend your reservation in 30 minute blocks, as long as the car isn't reserved by someone else. Once I was stuck a couple of blocks away at a traffic light with 2 minutes left on my reservation. I called the toll-free number on my cellphone, and with a couple of button pushes extended my reservation by 30 minutes. The telephone menu is set up to make extensions one of the easiest things you can do. It cost $4.25 but that's better than $25!
