What elements of Liberation Theology are acceptable?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

I was discussing Liberation Theology with my parish's DRE. She claims Liberation Theology offers nothing beneficial to Catholicism. I disagreed with her, not because I agree with Lib Theo, but because I don't totaly understand it. I have a feeling that the CDF has come out against it because of its Marxist influences and its tendency to encite violence in the name of God. But I imagine there has to be something of worth in Lib Theo.

Am I wrong?

Jesus' message clearly intended to liberate the poor in 1st century Palestine from oppressive structures. If Lib Theo is based on that idea, I see nothing wrong with it. He used the stories and experiences of the peasants and ordinary people in his parables to teach religious truth. If Lib Theo is based on that idea, I see nothing wrong with it.

Can I, as a conservative Catholic accept those precepts of Lib Theo without dissenting from Church teaching?
