Death and Hell

What does the "Death" signify in the passage " Apocalypse 20:13-14. 13 "And the sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and hell gave up their dead that were in them; and they were judged every one according to their works. 14 And hell and death were cast into the pool of fire. This is the second death." I always assumed it to mean purgatory.

There would be no reason to refer to Purgatory as "death" since all those in Purgatory have assurance of eternal life. Also, death is permanent. Purgatory is temporary. The passage refers to the end of time when the general judgement will occur. All those who ever lived will finally be sent for eternity to their final place of existence. Satan and his cohorts and those who have given their allegiance to him will forever be confined to hell. They will no longer have access to the earth and the universe, for the earth and universe will cease to exist. All of those who are in Purgatory will enter heaven, and Purgatory will also cease to exist.

Does this mean that people that are now in hell will have another chance at going to heaven in the final judgement? I mean, noone would choose to stay in hell if given a choice...

No it doesn't. At our particular judgement, at the moment of our individual death, we are judged either saved or condemned. That will not be reversed at the general judgement at the end of time.

Thanks paul but I already understand the Doctrine of Purgatory. Its just that I read once describing that particular passage that the language of the time referred to death with two different words that had two different meanings. One temporal and one permanent. And that passage used the temporal word when describing death. I just wanted to know if I had heard right and obviously i did not. So anyways, I still don't understand why they say: A)"death and hell", if there is only one hell which of course means death. b)How could hell be cast into hell(pool of fire)?

12: says "the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works", and in 13, that those in hell were judged according to their works - in the final judgement. It signifies that there are differences or different levels of rewards (in the case of the holy ones), as well as sufferings (in the case of the damned). They won't have another chance to escape hell, but their suffering will differ as per their actions, as God is kind as well as just.

The temporary word described to explain hell - It's not purgatory. That's different. This hell mentioned here is filled with people who are already damned for eternity. I hope this could clear it.

In 19:, it said that the beast and the false prophet were thrown into a lake of fire. There's a difference between the "hell" that is mentioned here, and the lake of fire which burns forever, where the beast and the prophet were thrown. After the thousand year period, satan himself would be thrown to that same lake of fire. This place is meant for satan and his minions. After the final judgement, the damned (who were already judged at the time of death) along with death, would be thrown to this same lake of everlasting fire.
