the fight of God and Devil within a man from Poe's view

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

Hello!

I am writing to ask you help in one question. I read on the forum about Poe’s duality and would like to ask some more information about it. The matter is that Edgar Poe was born in one year with famous Russia writer Nikolay Vasilyevich Gogol, in 1809. N. V. Gogol was and still stays one of the first and most interesting writer of mystery stories and stories about people of contemporary him society. The example of mystery story is ‘Viy’ where it is shown not only the duality of a human being, but also the fight between them in one person. The main idea is that in each man there are two sides – dark and bright. Within every man in the world live God and Devil and each of them tells the person what to do in different situations (God advices, Devil pushes). The idea of duality is all our wrong deed are from devil within us and, as a rule, in the majority cases we follow Devil but not the God. Poe in ‘The black cat’ describes the same. But there is a more interesting fact – N.V. Gogol had the same fear as Poe had! He had the fear of being buried alive, the fear of insanity. Some scientists say that some Cosmic reactions could influence them at the same period of time. Perhaps, somebody knows something more about it? Thank you in advance! Mary.

Sometimes, some ideas are "in the air" so to speak.
