On August 10, we members of the Catholic Church family honor, in a special way, the following friends of God -- "saints" and "blesseds" whose souls are now in heaven:

St. Lawrence of Huesca (Spanish, deacon in Rome, martyred [roasted on a grill] in 258)

St. Agilberta of Jouarre (French, abbess, d. 680)
Holy Martyrs of Alexandria (Egyptian, tortured and martyred between 260 and 267)
St. Aredius of Lyons (French, archbishop, d. 614)
St. Asteria of Bergamo (Italian, virgin, martyred c. 307)
Sts. Bassa, Paula, and Agathonica, of Carthage (North African, virgins, early martyrs)
St. Bettelin of Ilam (British, hermit?)
St. Blane of Bute (Scottish, monk in Ireland and Scotland, missionary bishop, c. 590)
St. Deusdedit of Rome (Italian, laborer, great benefactor of poor, 6th century)
Bl. Edward Grzymala of Kolodziaz and Bl. Francis Drzewiecki of Zduny [Franciszek] (Polish, diocesan priest and priest of Congregation of the Little Work of Divine Providence, martyred by Nazis at Dachau [Germany] at ages 33/34 in 1942 [beatified 1999])
King St. Gerontius of Devon (British, monarch, c. 508)
Bl. Hugh de Montaigu of Auxerre [Hugues] (French, Benedictine monk, bishop for 40 years, d. 1136)
St. Philomena (Italian, adolescent virgin, early martyr)
St. Thiento and six companions, of Wessobrunn (Bavarian, Benedictine abbot and monks, martyred in 955)

If you have anything to share about these holy people, please reply now -- biographical episodes, prayers through their intercession, the fact that one is your patron -- whatever moves you. If you are interested in one of these saints or blesseds and want to find out more about him/her, please ask. Additional information is sometimes available on the Internet.

All you holy men and women, saints of God, pray for us.
God bless you.
John

Dear John, St. Lawrence the Martyr is one of my most favorite saints. As child I was amazed at the story of his death and the facination has held on into adulthood. His love of God and his faith and sense of humor have been a guide to me always. To be roasted the way he was and then to tell the killers to turn him over to get done on the other side is more than I could ever imagine in the faith department. It's also good to know that the saints had a sense of humor too. You're not getting much response to the saint of the day posting but I wanted to let you know that I look at it every day. Ellen

Thanks, Ellen. I appreciate your gesture a lot -- and I agree with your comment about Saint Lawrence!
