Equal access

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Anarchy 2 : One Thread

Amazing, isn't it, how the world's leading democracy is so incredibly restrictive when it comes to equal access for candidates. Not only do the two main parties make everyone else jump through all kinds of hoops to even get on the ballot, but most third party candidates are almost completely shut out when it comes to media access. The only third-party candidates who can really get on the ballot are the billionares like Ross Perot. Now, campaign finance solves some of that by giving funds to some candidates who otherwise would have next to nothing, but then you're cost the taxpayers tons of money, and for what? So that candidates can run shitty ads and end up throwing all their money at the networks? Why should the people pay for candidates to get time on the airwaves we already own???

Yes, that's right, YOU own the airwaves. As much as the corporate media would like for you to beleive otherwise, they don't own shit. They are using our property for free. The least they could do is help oil the wheels of democracy by letting all the candidates have airtime.

I think that, starting a few months before the election, they should get all the Presidential candidates that are on the ballot in all fifty states together and give each of them five minutes to make their case. Switch the order around each week to keep things interesting and to give the candidates a chance to respond more personaly to each other. Allow more candidates into the debates. I mean come on, I don't want to see a debate between just Bush and Kerry. How boring would that be? It'd be like watching flies fuck! Let the Libertarian candidate take Bush on. Now that would be a fight to watch. And let him duke it out with the Socialist Party candidate on the sidelines. That would be awesome.

JEWS GIVE OVER 50% OF MONEY TO LIBERAL PARTIES. THEY GIVE OVER 20% TO CONSERVATIVE PARTIES. JEWS CONTROL THE MEDIA. TO GET AIR TIME YOU HAVE TO BE LIKED BY THE JEW.

"So that candidates can run shitty ads and end up throwing all their money at the networks? Why should the people pay for candidates to get time on the airwaves we already own???"

DO YOU REALLY THINK IF THEY EVEN HAD THE SAME MONEY AND ABILITY TO BE HEARD THAT PEOPLE WOULD VOTE FOR THEM??? MOST IF NOT ALL THIRD PARTIES ARE DEAD LOCKED ON ONE SINGLE ISSUE AND MOST IF NOT ALL HAVE NO REAL LEADERSHIP TO HELP BRING THEM UP. EVEN SO LOOK AT THE DEMOCRATS THEY SHOULDN'T EVEN HAVE POWER BUT YET PEOPLE VOTE FOR THEM JUST BECAUSE THEY ALWAYS HAVE AND SO HAD THEIR PARENTS. ZELL MILLER SHOULD JUST SWITCH PARTIES HE IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE LIBERALS LOSING THEIR GRIP.

HOW DO WE OWN THE AIRWAVES? COMPANIES OWN THEM AND THEY MAKE US THINK WHAT THEY WANT US TO. IF EVERY SINGLE WANNABE CANDIDATE HAD AIR TIME YOU WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO FOLLOW THE ELECTION OR KNOW WHAT THEY EXACTLY STAND FOR BECAUSE THEIR ARNT ENOUGH HOURS IN A DAY FOR EVERYONE TO HAVE ADEQUATE TIME.

"flies fuck"

IF YOUR GOING TO MAKE A JOKE MAKE AN NEW ONE NOT SOMETHING YOU HEARD GORGE CARLON SAY.

"Socialist Party candidate on the sidelines. That would be awesome."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA WE ALREADY HAVE A SOCIALIST PARTY ON THE BALLOT THEY ARE CALLED KERRY/EDWARDS!

Idiot.

Funny no one responded to that above post. You just posting saying idoit proves nothing. Why do you not show us all how he is an idoit. I know you are god like and can allow a post to speak for itself, but please explain youself lord. GRACE ME WITH YOUR KNOWLEGE!

-- Carter (Pike159@aol.com), August 07, 2004.

I was hoping some other people would actualy post something relating to the topic, and I didn't want to fill up the thread squabbling with this moron above. But I guess nobody wants to talk about campaign reform or equal media access for thrid-party candidates, so I'll enter my innevitable pissing match with the troll of the week.

"JEWS GIVE OVER 50% OF MONEY TO LIBERAL PARTIES. THEY GIVE OVER 20% TO CONSERVATIVE PARTIES. JEWS CONTROL THE MEDIA. TO GET AIR TIME YOU HAVE TO BE LIKED BY THE JEW."

Bullshit. Case in point: Michael Savage. That anti-semetic piece of shit is on radio stations across the country (brought to you by the wonderful folks at Disney and it's subsidiaries). Corporate radio. That's just racist bullshit you're spewing out and I'd really like to see you back it up.

"DO YOU REALLY THINK IF THEY EVEN HAD THE SAME MONEY AND ABILITY TO BE HEARD THAT PEOPLE WOULD VOTE FOR THEM???"

I'm not talking about money. I'm talking about air time. That's it. Just five minutes a week for everybody. Five minutes on a Wednesday night where John Doe from a previously unknown party can make himself heard right alongside George W. Bush. That's democracy, pal.

"MOST IF NOT ALL THIRD PARTIES ARE DEAD LOCKED ON ONE SINGLE ISSUE AND MOST IF NOT ALL HAVE NO REAL LEADERSHIP TO HELP BRING THEM UP."

Not neccessarily. Look at the Greens and Libertarians. Over the past couple of years, they have both been able to reinvent themselves from one-track platforms to very socialy relevant political organizations. The Libertarians do have a good leader--Michael Banardik, I think his name was. Tator got me hooked on him, and the more I read about him, the more I like him. The Greens had some pretty good leadrship last time around in Ralph Nader, although this time they've got some no- namer and Nader has completely lost his mind.

"HOW DO WE OWN THE AIRWAVES? COMPANIES OWN THEM AND THEY MAKE US THINK WHAT THEY WANT US TO."

No, no, no, the people own the airwaves. They are public property. That's why the government can regulate them as much as they do. The airwaves have always been publicly owned, but over the past sixty years or so, corporate America has done a pretty good job of making us forget that, and now they are using them for free. We need to take back the airwaves. If people just cared enough, there's plenty of methods to do so.

"IF EVERY SINGLE WANNABE CANDIDATE HAD AIR TIME YOU WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO FOLLOW THE ELECTION OR KNOW WHAT THEY EXACTLY STAND FOR BECAUSE THEIR ARNT ENOUGH HOURS IN A DAY FOR EVERYONE TO HAVE ADEQUATE TIME."

Nope, I'm talking only candidates who are on the ballot in at least 48 states. That will rule all the joke candidates and leave us with a few serious third parties who have a nationwide support base.

"IF YOUR GOING TO MAKE A JOKE MAKE AN NEW ONE NOT SOMETHING YOU HEARD GORGE CARLON SAY."

Hey! A fellow George Carlin fan! Glad you picked up on that, but George Carlin didn't origionate the phrase. It's actualy an old saying. I remember hearing my grandpa say it when I was litte, and he'd never heard of George Carlin.

"BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA WE ALREADY HAVE A SOCIALIST PARTY ON THE BALLOT THEY ARE CALLED KERRY/EDWARDS!"

Not by a long shot, pal.

-- Anti-bush (Comrade_bleh@hotmail.com), August 11, 2004.

Anti, the place you are looking for is 'Canada'. Just a hop skip and a jump north. Our PM is currently a tool, but not at the level of Bush, and the Canadian government isn't run by one person, so all his decisions can be shot down if the other leaders all get together and dont like them. Which happens from time to time.

Gee golly gosh, I sure do like my country. I mean, Americans can go on and on and on about how much Canadians 'need' American money and exports and imports all they want, but the fact remains, we remain pretty damn free and different. Marijuana is a step away from complete legalization, right now its decriminalized, and allowed for medical use. Our governmnet is many people, not one with a red button. We dont need an army, because nobody wants to take a shot at the country with the world as its ally. No other country 'hates' us, our leaders aren't protested widescale, we dont need to start wars. Im not saying Canada is better than the states in this fashion, just for a different folk of people. Cooler blood to go with the temperature, so they say.

anti quote: Hey! A fellow George Carlin fan! Glad you picked up on that, but George Carlin didn't origionate the phrase. It's actualy an old saying. I remember hearing my grandpa say it when I was litte, and he'd never heard of George Carlin. What? LAST WEEK!?!?! Who the fuck are you trying to bullshit!? The fucking government coordinates the airwaves by issuing licenses to businesses/individuals to use them. The airwaves may be public, but the equipment USED to access those airwaves are PRIVATE. You want to access them? Go to public access at your local cable company, or PAY to get your shit aired. Thats the way it is. Quit your bitchin about everything for once for fucks sake. All you do is bitch. In the real world, people like you are ignored. It's the movers and shakers that get shit done. Why don't you grow up first, then do something productive...like join the army (or in your case, the navy).

-- ProudAmerican (ProudAmerican@proudamerican.com), August 26, 2004.

So I take it you don't beleive that candidates should get equal access? You beleive that only the ones fortunate to have lots of money at their disposal should have their ideas be heard? The real MOVER AND SHAKERS don't come from the Democratic or Republican Parties. We haven't had one from either party in over thrirty years. WE NEED NEW IDEAS. The two parties don't move or shake anything. They maintain the status quo, and the status quo sucks.

-- Anti-bush (Comrade_bleh@hotmail.com), August 26, 2004.

Nope. BOTH get more than enough airtime, anti. Like I told you before...unless you live in a swing state, you won't see many ads at all. I DO live in one of those states, and I'm sick of seeing both of their ads.

Equal access argument is just another reason to bitch. Knock it off.

"then do something productive...like join the army"

What? I'm not sure if I understand correctly; how is it productive to join the army? What would he produce in the Army? Dead bodies? Your idea of productive may differ from mine.

-- J Biscuits (thefilthohgodthefilth@yahoo.com), August 26, 2004.

Productive as in: Doing something FOR the country instead of bitching about all that needs to be done. Bitching about it does nothing.

-- dtklnbdflgbjnfxlkgndfslikwrs (fdklgbjlkdf@kdlfngblx.com), August 26, 2004.

I'm not talking about ads. Ads are stupid. I'm talking about setting every wednesday night aside and letting every candidate who is on the ballot in at least 45 states have five minutes to speak their mind without interuption. Just them and a podium. When's the last time you've seen Ralph Nader on TV? Or Michael Banardick? There is equal access for two parties that don't bring any new ideas to the table in the first place. Everybody elese gets jack shit.

-- Anti-bush (Comrade_bleh@hotmail.com), August 27, 2004.

You're right. I didn't finish my thought, ads were only one piece of it. I guess I've seen all of them (or representatives for them) on all the Sunday talk shows, both on broadcast and cable, as well as in print. Even though fair is not always equal, I'd say they're getting enough coverage. Believe me, what more can they say that hasn't already been said a million times already? Most of the shit they're spewing now is just negative bullshit slung at the other party. Ish. I'm just anxious to get the whole mess done and over with.

-- ProudAmerican (ProudAmerican@yahfuckinghoo.com), August 28, 2004.

That's exactly my point. When we've got two parties that are exactly the same, senseless mudslinging is about all we can expect to see. A Wider range of ideas and choices would create more pressure for politicians to talk about the issues.

-- Anti-bush (Comrade_bleh@hotmail.com), August 29, 2004.

No one gives a good answer to this horrible question.

I believe that all horses on the presidential race track should get their day in court. Why not let them all be known and heard by the people (not that it matters, the votes of the American people serve merely as "suggestions" to the biased Electoral College)?

Murderer George Bush has oil money and a cadre of lackwitted, racist supporters, so he gets all of the coverage that he wants (2000, a 30-minute ad on FOX), and Kerry gets his yawn ads, so why not the dark horse candidates? Bush gets his time to bullshit us, Kerry gets his time to put us to sleep, but I swear that I never see any coverage or advertisements featuring the other party candidates, who as presidential candidates deserve some airwave time to express concerns and real ideas (...if any).

These ads aren't ways of bitching, and with every single candidate giving their piece on Wednesday (like Anti had suggested), then it will put the faces of the other candidates out there, and also minimizes mud-slinging.

Vote for Kerry; He's boring.

-- -- (dermondstate@citywoxley.org), August 29, 2004.

Because no one is going to vote for any of those dickheads! Well almost. As for Nader, I am not voting for him, but I think I will contribute a litte $$ to his campaign ;-)

And I have a little question for you, or any left wing hoser out there; IS THERE SOME SPECIAL OIL SUPPLY IN IRAQ WE ARE NOT GETTING IN SAUDIA ARABIA? And does not it make any sense to spend 90 billion on a war to make a profit?

Don't bother thinking about those 2, you haven't bothered yet.

-- (a@b.c), August 29, 2004.

With their support of gay marraige, the Democrats show they support equal access - to young boys.

-- Disgusted (straight@familyvalues.com), August 29, 2004.

"And does not it make any sense to spend 90 billion on a war to make a profit?"

Bush didn't spend 90 billion out of his own pocket, dumbass. It was taxpayer money. The profit is for him and his friends, not for the government. God, what a stupid argument.

"With their support of gay marraige, the Democrats show they support equal access - to young boys."

What does gay marriage have to do with pedophilia? Can you show me figures that show ANY kind of correlation between the two? Or are you just making shit up again?

-- Anti-bush (Comrade_bleh@hotmail.com), August 29, 2004.

So that is a stupid arguement, but going there for oil, when he is already "so tight with Saudis" is logical? Did someone pay him to set this thing up for them? Is Iraq, really a place a devoloper would want to invest in? I mean I know it's such a stable place and all, but still.

-- (a@b.c), August 29, 2004.

"With their support of gay marraige, the Democrats show they support equal access - to young boys."

The use of the term "equal access" in relation to easily molesting young boys is incorrect. Perhaps you meant "easy access". It doesn't matter; you're still a moron.

And just because there are sick people out there who have a homosexual attraction to young boys doesn't mean that all queers are child molesters, nor are they only polyamourous sex addicts.

-- -- (dermondstate@citywoxley.org), August 30, 2004.

Of course YOU would know - given that you give other men 'easy access' - to your ass.
