What do you mean by discipline? My definition is that we are actively teaching children to be responsible for their own behavior. Choice Theory is an explanation of behavior and it does mean that people can choose to do whatever they want. However, there are also consequences to actions good or bad. As we are helping children take responsibility for themselves, we also give them limited choices until they can make responsible choices for themselves. There are boundaries. In my mind, respect is not a choice. If a child chooses to be disrespectful, the child is removed from the situation until they can make a choice to be respectful to those around him/her. I hope this helps. If you would like other examples, please ask. I have been studying this theory for more than ten years and have actively been using it in a school setting with great success.
