No manuals in cars anymore?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : zipcar : One Thread

On two occasions, I've needed the car manual to figure out what is on the dashboard, or what a symbol on the gearshift meant. In both cases, the car did not have the manual, and I ended up wasting Zipcar's time by calling them -- and my time, because after a lot of phoning around and fumbling, they couldn't tell me the answer either.

Yet I remember when I first started out with Zipcar, in 2003, cars used to have manuals in them.

What's the deal? Don't you keep the manuals in the cars any more, and if not, why not?

FYI, the last car with this problem was Jetta Jenna in Cambridge, MA. And yes, I did report in the damage log that the manual is missing.
