here is a brief history;

Leininger developed her theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality: A Theory of Nursing, in the early 1950’’s. A time when few if any professional nurses had knowledge of anthropological concepts or cultural factors affecting health care. At a time when articles written about transcultural nursing were rejected by editors. The concept of transcultural nursing had limited interest for nurses until the 1970’s. In1977 the first masters and doctorate programs were initiated for transcultural nursing at the University of Utah. The first program was developed at Cuestra College in the early 1970’s. At the end of the 1980’s four masters and four doctorate programs were created in the US dedicated to transcultural nursing. In the 1990’s national and international organizations began to acknowledge and support transcultural nursing. In1996 was the initial inclusion of cultural care in plans of study for nursing education at the University of Colorado (where Leininger was professor of anthropology and nursing.)
