When St. Maria Goretti was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950, a quarter of a million people were present. Among them was an elderly man who was weeping. His name was Alessandro Serenelli. This was the man who attempted to rape Maria and who stabbed her 14 times, causing her to die 24 hours later. He repented after some years, having experienced a conversion following a dream in which Maria appeared to him and offered him lilies. He begged the Goretti family's forgiveness. Upon his release from prison, he visited Maria's mother to personally ask her pardon. St. Maria had forgiven him before she died.
