Junk files don't slow down computers. There are two likely causes why your computer is slower.

1) Files are fragmented. Defrag your hard disk. Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.

2) Too many programs are running in the background.

a) Move unnecessary programs out of your startup folder (Start > Programs > Startup ). Just put them anywhere else. Don't delete them straight away. If anything stops working within the next week, put them back. Restart your computer.

b) If you still see lots of program icons in the system tray (bottom right corner where the clock is), try to turn them off. Double click / right click, choose preferences/options, etc. Varies from program to program. No need to delete them all.

From my own experience, the biggest culprit are antivirus programs. They automatically run at unexpected times slowing down the computer.
