what is the difference between psychology as a science compared to common sense psychology?

There are many different things that fall under the category of "scientific psychology," and even more that fall under "common sense." It might help if you clarified your question somewhat by talking about particular areas or even issues in psychology. For instance, the difference between common sense (Western European?) understandings of memory and the scientific understanding of memory.

Like all sciences, scientific psychology has attempted (in a wide variety of often-competing ways) to develop a vocabulary and set of procedures that get at the *general* underlying dynamics of (particular areas of) the field. There is a great deal of debate over the level of success that has been achieved and, whatever else, the level of success appears to vary greatly from area to area.
