Well Faith, now I know from where you got the idea that the youn g man sinned!!! McCarthut!!!

The young man did not sin!!! What happenend he wasn't able to make the commitment Jesus asked of him: live a life of poverty and preaching.

I guarrantee you 95% of Evangelical Christians, 98% of Pentecostals/Chrismatics are not willing to make that commitment either.

People who followed that type of commitment: Francis of Assissi and the Franciscans, Dominicans,...Jesuits,..., the followers of mother Theresa of Calcuta among Catholics.

Among Protestants and Pre-Protestants: Peter Waldo, the founder of the Quakers, Huss, ....

Times have changed Faith.

What Zaccheus did was works working through faith. Protestants confuse the works of Jews and Catholics with works of faith. A work of faith, as Mc Carthur truly showed with the passenger in the plane is a life where the person shows the love for others and also living a kind of chaste living.

Woks of the Jews are: kosher food, keeping the Sabbath, works of righteousness, circumcision,..

Works of Catholics: prayers for the dead, acts of contrition, charity,...

Actually Elpidio--I get the idea that the young man sinned from Jesus himself. The article appealed to me because it confirmed what I already knew and it said it so well.

But there are other scholars who express this just as good....

If you don't recognize that you too are a sinner in need of a Savior-- you will follow right behind the young rich man., who never recognized his sin either.

You kid yourself if you think you can be perfect. You can't.

Jesus said he only needed one more thing, Faith.

Please cite your Scripture....so I can know what you are talking about.

I will quote again then the passage as found in Matthew. Taken from Blue Bible.

Mar 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? [there is] none good but one, [that is], God.

Mar 10:19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

Mar 10:20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.

Mar 10:21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

Mar 10:22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

Mar 10:23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

Mar 10:24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

Mar 10:25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

So in this passage I showed 2 things to you Faith: Jesus is not God and riches are a distraction to gain eternal life if they obscure our way.

Being rich is not a sin, as Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, King David,.... attest, but rather what we do!!!

Like I said before Faith: they have lied to you for so long in Sunday school.

The Man of Yahweh

Elpidio

You mean that you *think* you have shown me these things. However-- simply by referencing verses from the Bible doesn't prove your interpretation.

For example...when I read Mark 10:17-18

As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone."

I think.., Here is a man that recognizes that Jesus is good. When Jesus asks him *why* do you call me good?--and He points out that only God is good---I think He is making a great point to the man., and ultimately to those of us who read His words. If Jesus is good-- then He must also be God.

Now I agree that if this verse stood alone--it might be a stretch to see that revelation.., but when you receive it as part of the whole of Scripture--you can't miss this very crucial clue that Jesus gives us.

Also--when you think about it--the man didn't actually go on about *goodness* in the sense that Jesus should have had to say what He did. It isn't as if the Bible says there can be no good teachers or good carpenters etc... Jesus really took an insignificant choice of words that the man used--to really push a different meaning and thereby, revealing to those with *ears to hear* exactly *who* He is.

As far as Jesus' conversation with the rich man--it is obvious that the rich man thinks he has obeyed the commands of God since his youth, but Jesus says--no he hasn't. Jesus is not necessarily pointing only to rich people. There are plenty of other places in Scripture where Jesus refers to other things that keep us separated from God. His whole point is that for man it is impossible to get into heaven. No matter how much we try or what we think we have accomplished to be considered *good* it is never enough.

That is why Jesus completes this verse:

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." (Mark 10:25)

with this:

The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, "Who then can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God." (Mark 10:26,27)

And as far as my being lied to in Sunday school.., as a Catholic, well--you know the drill.

Basically., I lived a very secular, unreligious and unbelieving life from the time I was old enough to say no to church (about 17 yrs old) until I turned 38.

At that time--God convicted my heart while I was reading in the Scriptures at a friend's church. Suddenly I saw Jesus-- He touched my heart--and I knew I was in the presence of God. I knew I was reading His Word and I was born-again at that very moment. Since then--I have an easy understanding of Scripture and can't get enough of His Word.

I know the truth and I could never go back to where I was--never again. I stand convicted.

I am glad you were able to turn your life around, faith.

You have already undertaken the first steps on the road to salvation.

The Christian Yahwist

-- Elpidio Gonzalez (egonval@yahoo.com), June 10, 2004.

I think you mean "on the road to eternal life." It is my salvation (present tense) that makes my walk possible.

-- ("faith01@myway.com"), June 10, 2004.

Provided you don't stumble on the road. Too many holes and rocks along the way.

Remember Jesus parable about the sower and the seed? some fell among the thorns,...some fell ....(Mt Ch. 13, Mark ch. 4).

Make sure you don't stumble or fall again. We can lose our salvation any time, faith.

The Christian Yahwist

-- Elpidio Gonzalez (egonval@yahoo.com), June 10, 2004.

Jesus said that he will lose none whom the Father has given Him.

Salvation means deliverence from that danger--deliverence from the power and penalty of sin.

Truly saved people cannot lose this safety--it is a gift from God.., and we are to expect a long and difficult road in this life--but reward in the next.

The parable you reference is talking about foundation--I think of it as the foundation of the heart....a true and faithful heart is good soil...

It is true that one can turn their back on God--but a true believer never would.

Surely I will stumble and fall and sin in this life--thankfully my salvation didn't depend on my ability to be good or sinless--whew!!

Kevin.,

David moved our discussion to the "Eternal Life" thread.
