Southern 2-8-0 711

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

Hi, I heard that there is a Southern 2-8-0 numbered 711 somewhere in western North Carolina. I do not know if that is an original number, but I would like to go see it and photograph it if it exists. Someone at a train show sold me a Bachmann 2-8-0 lettered that way and painted in black. It is a really nice looking loco. I personally think it looks better in black rather than the green and gold. I am ok with the Crescent Limited (I love it), but I believe the green and gold is a little over done.

Hello Victor; Southern 711 is listed as a class ks-2 2-8-0 w/57" drivers. As far as being somewhere in western NC, that would be nice, but I think you may be thinking of 722 which is at the Smoky Mountain Railroad undergoing a slow restoration. Here sister engine 630 is being restored at the TVRM. The Bachman is a fair representation of the Southern 2-8-0's but have their sand and steam domes in reverse. I personally have three of them and with a little modifications, they'll pass for a Southern engine OK.RDC
