Annoying anime sites rant

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Community Anime Reviews : One Thread

I just had to say this because it has been annoying me so much lately. I think it's great all the anime sites out there that put up media for everyone to download. I mean they are doing a great favor for everyone, and it's nice to not have to spend so much money to see the anime we all enjoy. But there is one thing I can't stand anymore, when sites beg over and over again for donations. Yes I know it costs money to run a site. But the reason people go to these sites is for free media. It's fine to have a donate button, but if you mention it more than once... Let's look at an example (www.eanime.net).

News Post 1- well I put up the donations button, and remember all donations received go straight to the site, and the more donations we receive the MORE MEDIA because all donations go toward the site, so get donating! -That's fine for one post. Next Posts though (cut shorter) News Post 2-cowboy bebop is now online, and remember get donating so I can upload more, all donations go to the site News Post 3-now im gonna try to upload some yugioh and some movies, and remember please donate to the site so I can upload more, all donations go toward the site News Post 4- I added yugioh eps 45 - 48 and yeah thats the start of Battle City , and remember donate so I can upload more media for your guys, and all donations go straight to the site News Post 5-the ginyu saga, and remember guys get donating so I can upload more and more News Post 6- but I will upload other media as well in between, and remember guys get donating so I can keep uploadin for ya News Post 7- 1 - 9 tomorow, and remember guys get donating so I can continue to upload for ya

All these posts were between 5/25-5/31 Now I have nothing against their site, except an old arnold schwartzenegger quote comes to mind which i think you know. If you want donations, a hundred times will not get them. People respect you more when you ask once, show them how to do it, and let them do it of there own accord. In addition to this, put up a mod button, most people know what it does for the site, or let them know... once.

That is all.

Although I don't advocate repeating the same message online when people can read the message the first time the person made it, I can see why webmasters beg for donations when they upload huge chunk of data like videos. Do understand that the amount of space available for a website and how much transfer of data a month is proportional to how much it cost to maintain a website. Webhosts that allow 10 gb of transfer a month(regardless to how much HD space you got for your site layout, files, etc.) cost at least 40-80 a month. When you're talking about hosting anime, 10 gb a month is ridiculous. You would be able to send about 200 rm files before the website gets shut down for too much data transfer. This problem gets worse because the people here link others into http source for anime, making the website go down even faster.
I have been tempted to write threads on several occasions screaming at people who is either too stubborn or too lazy to use filesharing applications. Apparently no one bothers to do research on how much money and work it takes to put a site up, and they keep asking for anime without using bittorrent. You want anime for free? Then use BT/IRC/DC/EMULE/others and WAIT. By average it takes me at least 3 days to grab one episode. Sure there are faster ways, but you have to find it yourself, and believe me, you won't find that in websites.
Or if you still think that's not good enough for you, buy the fucking dvds and stop whining about sites getting shut down. It's leechers like you that killed it, so don't blame the webmaster, the people who put up the link for anime, or the site staff, because it is the leecher's fault alone.

All i'm saying is it is the responsibility of the webmasters to know this. And they shouldn't be expecting much from people downloading. I personally do use bt and direct connect, it's much easier to get stuff. I'll occasionally use a website, and if i do usually click on any banners. I'm just saying that the constant nagging, gets sites nowhere, it only makes them look childish. Example of a good site that has never done that is www.slopeanime.com. Yes they exceed there bandwith alot, but at least they have class.

I'll give you my opinion as soon as I get some more donations..Giant robots cost a lot to operate after all. LOL.

Come on, in the sake of the P2P spirit... LOL

Like ubb said, use BT/IRC/Mule/etc. Http or Ftp direct download is just way too heavy to distribute anime. The anime group just need to distribute 5-10 copies and people can keep distributing. Instead of giving all these donation, get a high speed internet connection and give donations only to your favorite anime sub group. I think that I only donate to suprnova and Inane ;)

If I ever have a paypal account, I'd donate to Bram Cohen(creator of bittorrent) and maybe scarywater.

OMG!!!!! Who are these people with their sick and twisted little minds??!!!! Get out of here!!!!!

Hi Adam ^_^

Yeah I know all about these stupid little donation things and I agree with you. One message is enough rather than a million. If people have to read that (Those messages you listed) then they probably will never return to that site. I know I wouldn't.

Downloading anime from websites is dumb in the first place. The quality of the anime is horrible, and who the fuck thought it was wise to use RealMedia format? Most of the sites I see seem to want to use that format. Jesus fucking christ. Why not try downloading from better sources that have better rips and more than one audio track. Who gives a shit if the website asks for donations constantly. They need money to keep that shit running. If you're just leeching, you don't need to pay attention to shit like that. Especially if you don't donate in the first place.
