Right now it is a Open Discussion forum. BTW, rumors are that once the severs die, the forums here at greenspun won't be revived. Although I think they have died once already, but I don't know.

Well, we already got one member.

-- David Ortiz (cyberpunk1986@hotmail.com), May 24, 2004.

And another.

I see positives and negatives to this forum and the Greenspun one, so I can't say that I like one better than the other. I have participated extensively in yahoogroups in the past, and I prefer greenspun's setup. It is much easier to follow a thread, and the info to which you're responding does not need to be repeated over and over. OTOH, Yahoo is much easier if you need to go away for awhile, because you can go back to the date where you left off. At this point, I prefer Greenspun, but I don't think I would anymore if I got a computer virus or something from it.

Greenspun
Advantages:
-clear separation of threads
-less need to repost comments of others to which you are responding
-easier to check responses on one topic
-more internet visibility to attract new members
-HTML capabilities to do fancy stuff (bold, blockquote, center, etc)

Disadvantages:
-vulnerability to attacks
-difficult to view what you missed if gone over a long period of time
-may lose forum in the future - Yahoo is more stable

Yahoogroups
Advantages:
-easier to read what you missed while away
-less vulnerable to attacks (tho still possible in other ways, eg. spammers)
-More capabilities such as chat, posting files, polls, etc.
-different types of options for receiving forum emails

Disadvantages:
-No fancy HTML stuff
-more difficult to follow a thread
-need to repost others' comments more often in order to respond

Please feel free to add to my charts.

Another thing: Yahoo does not allow for anonymous posting. David currently has the forum set on public archives, and I don't really like that idea. That means I will probably start getting lots of spam again. However, if the archives are private (allowing us to avoid most spam), it may be difficult to attract new members (threads won't appear on google searches).

It might be fixed now. I just added some code to disallow OBJECT and EMBED and PARAM for good measure.

Dear Philip,

Below is a copy of one of the less harmful scripts people are using to spam the greenspun boards. This is getting very annoying. You click on a thread and you get tons of windows popping up, and flash movies playing. Is there any way to stop this? Like a script we can place to stop it? Or can you do anything to help?

"We can't accept messages with certain HTML tags; they can interfere with other users' browser.

Please back up and try plain text!"

I think our problem is fixed.

David,

I sent you an email. If you choose yahoo, I'd be willing to help, but only for the summer. I will be busy again at graduate school in the fall.

It's called the Bird's Opening. I was seeing if you knew how to play chess and if you'd respond.

-- David Ortiz (cyberpunk1986@hotmail.com), May 24, 2004.

Yikes! I'm a traditionalist when it comes to chess--Old School.

Uh......Bobby Fischer. I guess that pretty much dates my chess playing.

Mikhail Botvinnik is my favorite player. I've kind of copied his pawn structure and has helped me throw off players who know more "books moves" than me.

my class is here.....got to go.

Well, only two students are present; the rest are on a field trip and we have a concert tommorrow night. Who needs the practice??

In Jr. High, I was super quiet and aloof. They had a chess team consisting of the super whiz kids of the school. During my lunch break, I would go and play a game of chess with those "champions of chess". Had I joined the team......well, I could beat most of them. I would have probably ranked 3rd. I've only beat my computer twice. I do not like computer chess programs; they have the advantage, obviously.

I'm ranked 8th in the valley of highschool students. My school has no competition. I have to spice up things by playing 4 or 5 games at the same time.

Excellent!
