Where did the name 'Dogpatch' come from?

Any history about the 3rd street corridor name of Dogpatch and the park would be appreciated. Also where does Potrero Hill name come from?

As I understand it, Dogpatch was an area where wild dogs lived and bred.

Potrero is Spanish for "common grazing area". It is similar to the old English "commons". The Mission Dolores and several Ranchos including Bernal and San Miguel used the Potrero to graze cattle in the 1780s-1830s.

Good luck in your research.
